The first details of a contract to sell Sebastopol’s hospital were unveiled on February 4 at a meeting of the Board of the Palm Drive Health Care District.

On March 5, voters in the Palm Drive Health Care District will go to the polls to decide if Sebastopol’s struggling public hospital will be leased, then sold, to a private, for profit company, American Advanced Management Group of Modesto. The District is putting the former Palm Drive Hospital on the market because it has consistently lost money. Despite 20 years of good faith efforts and multiple managers, the District is $28 million in debt and in its second bankruptcy. Former employees and vendors are still owed more than $8 million.

This is the third time this vacancy on the Planning Commission has been advertised because no one applied. Why the lack of interest? It’s been suggested that “everyone’s really busy,” “the next generation doesn’t care about public service,” “volunteerism is down,” or “people get involved only when there’s conflict.” This is puzzling because being involved in community service is intrinsically rewarding. Get involved in our democracy, and with other citizens, make decisions about land use. Shape our community, now and for years to come. Find out more — attend meetings, talk to current Commissioners, review the paperwork — and consider trying out for the open seat.

We’re Talking about the Sebastopol Branch of the Regional Public Library. Information and statistics, proving these descriptors, abound. Let’s start with some numbers. Library Commissioner Stephen C. Zollman, recently shared them in his Annual Report to the City Council. In 2018, Sebastopol Library users borrowed over 367,324 items: books, movies, video games, home energy kits, Regional Parks passes, and more. These enthusiastic patrons share about 10,000 square feet with the dedicated staff and volunteers. In comparison, the Petaluma Library topped at 400,681 items in a 26,400 square foot facility; third place Rohnert Park-Cotati circulated 364,953 in a building of 25,000 square feet.

‘Swallow’ is an eccentric, captivating experience. Scottish playwrighttef Smith uses first-person narration, which is rather like hearing a book read aloud. It is odd at first, but once settled, the style is mesmerizing, filling in small details like smells and the quiet beauty of drifting snow. It is especially fascinating to hear characters reacting to each other with astute observations.

‘After Miss Julie’ is a tightly-written, captivating play with the steamy rhythm of a sensual tango. Raucous celebrations of the 1945 Labour party victory reverberate around the cozy kitchen of an English country manor. Christine, the hard-working, amiable cook is looking forward to a romantic evening with John, the chauffer. Instead, the bewitching lady of the house, Miss Julie, flounces downstairs, where she does not belong, and shamelessly attempts to carouse with the staff. Their consternation simply amuses her, and Julie chuckles at their “feudal anxiety.”
