The long-awaited parking lot at the Jenner Headlands Preserve is almost ready for its grand opening. Located 1.5 miles north of Jenner on Coast Highway One, volunteers are busy planting landscaping plants, while work crews put the finishing touches on the infra-structure.

As a boy growing up in Sonoma County and small-town Santa Rosa, I was fortunate to have the creeks, rivers, Redwood forests and the wild and pristine coast to call my playground.

We are ringing in the New Year after the driest December in the last 100 years of local weather record keeping. Hopefully we will get the rain we desperately need – soon! We don’t want to even think about the “D” word! Between the dead and dying drought-stressed Pines and Firs and the Tan Bark Oak scourge Sudden Oak Death Syndrome, fire abatement crews have their hands full.

Rain! Precious rain! A blessing that fills our creeks & rivers and recharges the over-spent aquifers. The showers we have recently experienced are an indicator that our winter storm cycles are upon us, and that we can finally breathe a sigh of relief as our fire-fears are extinguished.

911 call boxes are currently being decommissioned along our remote North Coast Hwy 1. Although personal cell phone reception along our coastline is spotty at best and non-existent in most areas, for some reason the ‘powers that be’ have decided that the Public does not need the luxury of the emergency 911 call boxes.
