Local Fisherman Dick Ogg provided information on the Whale entanglements and why the sudden closure of the season. (Whales often get caught up in crab traps because they feed in biologically rich areas). “Crab season, which would typically extend to June 30th was closed Statewide April 15th. Not due to an increase in Dungeness crab gear entanglements but due to the litigation of the lawsuit filed by the Center for Biological Diversity. Of the total entanglements in 2017, there were only six confirmed crab entanglements, 2018 there were 5, and to date, there are 0 for 2019. The fishermen have gone to great length to tighten up their gear (less line scope), shorten buoy length, neutral line which doesn't float on the surface and removed leads on the line to help decrease the possibility of loops. Our increased effort to recover our lost gear through our gear recovery programs has also been very successful”.

Here in Sonoma County, we could really use some of that money, specifically to FIXCoast Highway One. Now there are TWO slides into the sea that require detours, bright lights, and one-lane passage. Last year CalTrans met with coast communities to discuss the proposed repairs, what EIRs would be required, where the new road would be routed, etc. In the meantime, there have only been bandaids to keep Highway from slipping further into the sea.
