Local Fisherman Dick Ogg provided information on the Whale entanglements and why the sudden closure of the season. (Whales often get caught up in crab traps because they feed in biologically rich areas).  “Crab season, which would typically extend to June 30th was closed Statewide April 15th. Not due to an increase in Dungeness crab gear entanglements but due to the litigation of the lawsuit filed by the Center for Biological Diversity. Of the total entanglements in 2017, there were only six confirmed crab entanglements, 2018 there were 5, and to date, there are 0 for 2019. The fishermen have gone to great length to tighten up their gear (less line scope), shorten buoy length, neutral line which doesn't float on the surface and removed leads on the line to help decrease the possibility of loops. Our increased effort to recover our lost gear through our gear recovery programs has also been very successful”.

With over 4 – 6 Million visitors traveling through Bodega Bay on Highway 1, sections of the road have deteriorated so much that, for the safety of motorists & bicyclists, two sections have immediately been reduced to a single lane.

Here in Sonoma County, we could really use some of that money, specifically to FIXCoast Highway One. Now there are TWO slides into the sea that require detours, bright lights, and one-lane passage. Last year CalTrans met with coast communities to discuss the proposed repairs, what EIRs would be required, where the new road would be routed, etc. In the meantime, there have only been bandaids to keep Highway from slipping further into the sea.

That urge to put your feet in the soft warm sand, dip your toes in the cool ocean, fly a kite, build a sand castle, buy some fabulous art, build a boat, go fishing, dine on delicious seafood & so much more.  Yes, it is that time of year when the ocean nourishes our body and lets us enjoy all things Bodega Bay! Ahhhh!

LOVING SPRING AT THE COAST with gentle breezes, nourishing sprinkles and flower blooms bursting! I must have Coastal Spring Fever! With rain measured in feet, rather than inches in February & March, Bodega Bay is now awash in colorful flowers, cruising whales & crystal blue waves. The show is spectacular. Let’s put the flood behind us but keep those who lost so much in our hearts and open our wallets for their fundraisers. DORAN PARK IS GETTING SOME MUCH DESERVED TLC with improvements to the boat launch, showers, kayak launch, new trails& so much more. County Measure M funds, some incredible grants and donations are making dreams come true for this beautiful park.

MOTHER NATURE DELIVERED ANOTHER PUNCH in February to the already soaked Sonoma Coast.  Were we prepared?  Did we learn from last year’s major storm that certain roads & creeks needed some TLC?  Valley Ford Road, the main route for residents and visitors going to the Coast, flooded again. Highway 1 is crumbling into the ocean in many places. Even our Evacuation Route on Bay Hill closed.  Up to 6 million visitors to Bodega Bay a year doesn’t generate enough revenue to fix our roads?
