Sonoma County welcomes Dr. Tanya Phares as health leader
New chapter in public health
Dr. Tanya Phares, a public health and preventive medicine expert from Reno, has been named the new health officer for Sonoma County, following a unanimous decision by the Board of Supervisors.
From Nevada to Northern California
Phares, who recently consulted on preventive medicine in Reno, brings a wealth of experience to Sonoma County. Her career includes leadership as Chief Medical Officer for a hospital network and heading medical direction at a vaccine clinic. With over 15 years in the field, she has honed her expertise in public health and general preventive medicine, practicing most recently in Newport Beach, CA.
Expertise in wellness and women's health
Known for her personalized approach to health care, Dr. Phares has been instrumental in developing health and wellness policies. Her specialty in disease prevention and lifestyle medicine, particularly in women’s health, has distinguished her in the medical community.
Stepping into a pivotal role
Dr. Phares will begin her tenure on Nov. 14, taking over from Dr. Karen Smith, who has been serving as interim health officer. The health officer is pivotal in shaping health policy and responding to public health emergencies, equipped with the authority to enforce health laws and issue orders as needed.
Educational foundation for public service
Dr. Phares earned her medical degree from Western University of Health Sciences and completed an internal medicine residency at the University of California, Irvine. She further specialized with a preventive medicine residency and holds a master's degree in public health, laying a solid foundation for her new role as Sonoma County's chief health strategist.
