Film and Theater by Don Gibble - September 2019

I can't believe Summer is over! The great thing about September is that the Oscar caliber films start coming out. The one I'm excited about is

Opening September 20th is “Downton Abbey” starring Maggie Smith, Hugh Bonneville and Michelle Dockery. It's hard to believe Smith is 84 years old. She looks amazing and is bound to steal every scene as she usually does. The Crawleys and their servants prepare a royal visit from the king and queen. You don't have to see the series to enjoy this new chapter.

Opening September 27th is “Judy” starring Renee Zellweger and Michael Gambon. Thirty years after starring in “The Wizard of Oz” beloved actress and singer Judy Garland arrives in London to perform sold-out shows at The Talk of the Town nightclub. While there, she reminisces with friends and fans and begins a whirlwind romance with musician Mickey Deans, her soon-to-be fifth husband!

Also opening September 27th is “21 Bridges” starring Chadwick Boseman and Taylor Kitsch. After uncovering a massive conspiracy, an embattled NYPD detective joins a citywide manhunt for two young cop killers. As the night unfolds, he soon becomes unsure of who to pursue – and who's in pursuit of him. When the search intensifies, authorities decide to take extreme measures by closing all of Manhattan's 21 bridges to prevent the suspects from escaping.

Stephen King fans will be happy to know that “It Chapter Two” finally comes out September 6th. Starring Jessica Chastain and James McAvoy. The evil clown Pennywise returns 27 years later to torment the grown-up members of the Loser's Club.

There's little bit of everything this month at our local movie theater. Next month is the Mill Valley Film Festival and I will highlight the best movies to see there.

For my live theater fans this is a busy month. Starting with “Gypsy” at 6th Street Playhouse. Directed by the very talented Jared Sakren and starring Broadway's Kathy Fitzgerald as Mama Rose. This musical is timeless and for those of you who haven't seen it this is your chance. I played Rose's dad in high school 33 years ago, so you know I'm going opening night! It opens September 20th. Call 707 523 4185 for information and tickets.

The Transcendence people have a new show opening September 6th at Jack London State Historic Park called “The Gala Celebration” It features community tributes and one-night-only opportunities. Call877 424 1414 for information and tickets.

If you missed the Richmond/Ermet Aid Foundation event August 18th you have a chance to help September 16th by attending Protest! Revel with Some Rebels featuring cast members from Hamilton at the Marines' Memorial Theater in San Francisco. Go to www.reaf.org for more information.

Andy Grammer fans will be happy to know he is coming to the Green Center at Sonoma State September 6th. For those of you who don't know who he is his debut album featured the platinum singles “Keep Your Head Up” and “Fine By Me.” Call 707 664 4246 for more information.
