Film and Theater by Don Gibble - August 2018

I can’t believe the end of Summer is approaching. The good news is there are amazing movies to see in the theater. The first must see movie is “Blindspotting”. One of the stars of the Broadway smash “Hamilton” stars in this unique movie.

The next movie is “Christopher Robin”. Perfect for the whole family. Ewan McGregor stars as the title character best known from the “Winnie the Pooh” books and movies. Christopher Robin thinks he’s losing his mind when Pooh is joined by Tigger, Eeyore and Piglet and other people can’t hear them just see them as stuffed animals. We need a movie like this right now. It opens this weekend!

The very talented Ethan Hawke is back in “Juliet, Naked” which opens August 17th. It also stars Rose Byrne. The movie is based on Nick Hornby’s novel. For those of you needing a romantic love story, this is for you.

Also opening August 17, is “Crazy Rich Asians”. This is an adaptation of Kevin Kwan’s best-selling novel. Think “Dynasty” meets “The Joy Luck Club”. It stars Awkwafina, the funny actress from “Ocean’s 8”. She steals every scene from the other lead actress, Constance Wu. Opening this weekend is “The Wife”, starring Glenn Close as a woman who sacrificed a career to support her husband’s. Close can finally win her elusive Oscar! Mark Wahlberg fans will be happy he’s back in the theaters with “Mile 22”. An American intelligence operative tries to smuggle information over international boundaries. It opens August 17. James Franco fans will want to see “Kin” opening August 31. Franco plays a vengeful criminal who pursues a man recently released from prison and his brother.

For my live theater fans, Let’s start with the Sonoma County Fair. The two concerts to catch this year are Queen Nation August 2 at 7:30 pm. This is an amazing cover band for Queen. The other concert is Super Diamond, August 8 at 7:30pm. They are also a cover band honoring Neil Diamond. Both concerts are free with the price of admission to the fair.

“Help is on the Way” is back at the Herbst Theatre in San Francisco. This is by far the best charity event in San Francisco. August 19 at 7:30pm with a silent auction and cocktails at 6pm. Davis Gaines who starred on Broadway in “The Phantom of the Opera” and Mary Wilson from The Supremes are the headliners. Go to reaf.org for more information. “Les Miserables” is back! Running from August 8 - 26 at the famous Orpheum Theater in San Francisco. Fans of “Grease” have until August 5 to catch this awesome show at the Berkeley Playhouse. One of my favorite musicals is “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” which opens August 3 at the Woodminster Amphitheater in Oakland. Fans of “Hamilton” will want to see “In the Heights”, also at the Woodminster which opens August 31. It’s going to be very busy at the Woodminster this month. At the Green Center this month is Hunter Hayes, August 10 at 7:30pm. Email me at dongibblecast@hotmail.
