Feeling on edge? Take it off. Be of service.

March is one of my favorite months of the year. Okay itā€™s not because it is my birthday month but because I love Spring. I love the budding flowers on the plum trees in my back year even though I know a rain, or an occasional hailstorm will them out. And seeing the resilience shine through.

This month, also as incredible as it sounds, marks the one-year anniversary of our first Shelter In Place (SIP) from COVID-19. Itā€™s been a wild ride and the way I look at this is we are making history. Seriously, one day we will look back and see that we were living in an incredible time and it will make it in the history books. We are living (and sadly far too many dying) in a pandemic. There are not too many times in the history books they talk about this, much less experience it. Letā€™s face it: we are making history

A year into this pandemic everyone is exhausted, lonely and on edge. Iā€™m a firm believer that people can flourish from challenging experiences and become better people, or flounder and wallow is petty. This pandemic really has given people an opportunity to be the best who they can be if they are up to the challenge. And sadly, for some people it has been the worse time in their life, and they can't wait to get back to their pre COVID-19 life.

I am very open about being an addict and alcoholic. My sobriety is 10/1/83 and every day that I wake up I am grateful for having the opportunity to get a redo on a life I was not going to survive. Even with 37 years of no drugs or alcohol to stuff my feelings I am still humbled because we are in scary times. It does not really surprise me that a lot of people have relapsed, overdosed or committed suicide. It has truly only been though the tools I learned in my early days of 12 step programs, a high power and a desire to be a good role model to others who are suffering that keeps me going. Addiction kills and I will be damned if this will kill me. I would much rather die by giving too much of myself to others. Doing service is how I keep healthy.

I was recently given the opportunity to help keep humanity on the survival track. Thatā€™s right, I have the all-important duty to assist at the Huerta Gym. While nurses are helping inject doses of life saving vaccine into agriculture worker arms. Itā€™s an honor to be helping these hard workers have a chance for survival. My job is to direct traffic. It might seem a minor thing to some people but at least I am doing my part in this circle of life. It is an honor for me to be helping serve humanity.

As of the February 18th, there have been 102,828 vaccine doses administered in Sonoma County. Itā€™s not a cure, we still must mask up and socially distance but if we still get sick itā€™s not as deadly.

Okay now stopping back to the more fun activities in townā€¦These were submitted and included because we want people to be educated about our upcoming future election that is mail in only and deadline is May 4th.

How do you imagine the future of our local library system? Please join library staff and other community leaders for a candid conversation about how we can help your family and the people you care about as we contemplate a future filled with uncertainty, opportunity, and change.

The Sonoma County Library has embarked on a Reimagining Plan, and your input will help us understand current impacts and future opportunities, on you and on the people who matter to you.

The questions weā€™ll discuss in a facilitated 90-minute listening session are:

1. Looking back at 2020, what had the biggest impact on you and/or your family?

2. What kind of community do you want to live in?

3. Why is that important to you?

4. What needs to happen to create that kind of change?

5. What was a pleasant surprise about 2020?

6. Is there anything else you want to tell Sonoma County Library?

If these times donā€™t work for you, please email reimagining@sonomalibrary.org and we can direct you to an online survey.

A free public library, responsive and flexible to community needs, will be a key factor in our communityā€™s successful recovery from current and future challenges. We look forward to hearing your perspective how we can help.

Our last public listening sessions will be held:

Thursday, March 4, from 6 pm to 7:30 pm

Please click on the links above to register for one of the sessions, which will be conducted via Zoom. Spanish-language breakout discussions will take place at each session. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the session.

And please, take a moment to think about

In closing, Mother Nature is still angry at us, and we must learn to obey what she demands, or we may not make it to the other end some people say that is way to spiritual, but the earth might just be better off without human beings on it. We need to pay attention.

As always if you want to reach out to me please email me at Lorene@mac.com Iā€™m always happy to connect with people.
