Experiencing spring in Cazadero: Community news and updates

Spring's arrival in Cazadero

As the sun is still high in the sky in the late afternoon, I am finally experiencing spring! The majestic redwoods surrounding my cozy cyber-hut seem to glow in the bright light. We have received about 60 inches of rain so far this season, albeit in a rather astounding manner. The coastal hills remain a vivid green and the cattle are chomping away.

North Bay Spirit Award winner

I want to commend the Press Democrat's article written in the Apr. 16 edition regarding Cazadero resident Susan Hrastar, who has been awarded the North Bay Spirit Award for her and dog Phi's untiring effort to keep our beautiful area litter-free. I find it absolutely ridiculous that folks throw household and other trash on public roads to pollute our visual and other senses. Many thanks, Susan and Phi, for contributing to the beauty of King Ridge Road.

Montgomery Elementary School events

I am happy to tell you that Montgomery Elementary School will, after a three-year pause, once again host their annual Open House on May 27, from 6-8 p.m. The entire school will have a field trip to Safari West on May 12 - WOW! Congratulations to eighth-grader Priya Triolo, who will graduate from MES on May 31.

Cazadero Community Club news

The next meeting of the Cazadero Community Club will be on Wednesday, May 3, at 6 p.m. at Fire Hall No. 1. Plans are afoot for the Firefighters Appreciation Dinner, which will be held on Saturday, May 20, at Northwood Restaurant in Monte Rio. Club members will receive information regarding their attendance. Three Bingo Nights are coming up. These will be on the Saturdays of Memorial Day weekend, July 4 and Labor Day, beginning at 7 p.m. The always tasty pancake breakfast will be on Sunday, Aug. 27. Please attend a meeting and help your neighbors plan events that benefit the entire community.

GMRS tests and Redwood Empire Food Bank distribution

The GMRS tests are on Wednesdays at 6:39 p.m. Caz Supply has the radios.

The wonderful Redwood Empire Food Bank has its food distribution each first Wednesday from 10-11 a.m. adjacent to the Jenner C Store. The helpful volunteers from the Jenner Community Club will place the items directly into your vehicle.

Road conditions and fire lookout donations

I am sure that many of you who travel our roads are not pleased to see and experience the further deterioration of part of Cazadero Highway. I hope that we don't have to wait too long for attention to this problem.

With most of this year's rainfall now behind us (I'll take a few drops more), we need to focus on the ever-present wildland fire threat. Please donate to the privately run and essential Pole Mountain Fire Lookout. Their mailing address is P.O. Box 141, Cazadero, CA 95421.

Celebrations and local attractions

My best wishes to all who will celebrate anniversaries and birthdays in May, plus of course, Happy Mother's Day! Celebrate and eat cake!

I am definitely planning to spend more time at Goat Rock/Blind Beach, staring at the waves and decompressing from our usual busy lives. We are fortunate indeed to live in our beautiful area where we can absorb the benefits of nature.

Local events and businesses

Do check out Raymond's Bakery Friday Music and Pizza Nights. Cazadero Supply offers a vast assortment of items to make your current home, garden, and vehicular projects go smoothly.

Book recommendation: "Sacred Sonoma"

An interesting book "Sacred Sonoma" by Beth Winegardner has caught my attention, and I recommend it. There are several references to Cazadero, including an article regarding Austin Creek and rock carvings at Ward Creek, a major tributary of Austin Creek. There is also a reference to Pole Mountain, the privately-run Fire Lookout at 2,204 feet. With sweeping views, the Lookout is invaluable in spotting possible future conflagrations.
