April is finally here!

Yay! Warmer weather is coming our way. A little sunshine goes a long way.

Don't get me wrong, I am hoping for more rain and am keeping my fingers and toes crossed that we have some nice rainy days ahead.

Rio Nido Sunrise Community Garden

This is the 14th season of the Sunrise Community Garden. This season kicked off with two garden work days in late February and early March. The garden had a great turnout of "garden elves" come out and help cut lumber, move soil, assemble wood frames, do general cleanup and of course weeding. Twelve garden plot frames were replaced, we improved three more and built additional rings for the compost boxes using wood salvaged from the replaced plot frames. Everyone had a blast in the process! Many thanks to Russian River Park and Recreation for funding the lumber. This generous contribution enabled us to do a lot more than we could have done by ourselves in a typical season. Russian River Park and Rec pays for the water that runs through the new irrigation system they installed last year. Aside from that, the garden runs on annual contributions from members.

These contributions fund soil for the garden plots, mulch for the pathways, as well as seeds and plants for the garden members common areas, plus hoses, tools and other needs of the garden. Spring planting day was March 20th for early plantings. Mid-April we plant tomatoes and summer crops. We grow a wide array of crops including cucumbers, peas, summer and winter squash, tarragon, thyme and oregano growing in the plots for the garden for members to share. We welcome everyone into the garden. Come in and enjoy it's peacefulness and take in a bit of the abundant sunshine. You don't need to be a Rio Nido resident to join, but it is important to have enough time and energy to devote to both your individual plot and well as pitching in with the group work.

Personal and community involvement are keys to the success of the garden. If you are interested in joining the garden, contact volunteer coordinators Patty Bailey and Moire Martin for more information, and to request your name be added to the garden waiting list.

Rio Nido pet of the month: Bubba

Bubba is in charge here. Rio Nido pet of the month for April.
Bubba is in charge here. Rio Nido pet of the month for April.

This is Bubba. Bubba is a character. He is not your typical cat. He does quite well on a leash like a dog. He enjoys going to the ocean with his human mommy. He sits and ponders his kitty life while soaking in the sun and watching the ocean waves. This is his favorite pastime. Normally you will find Bubba looking out the many windows in his home at birds chirping away. He is friendly and a joy to be around. Let's give Bubba a big Rio Nido welcome.
