BREAD…spread it THICK with BUTTER fresh from the oven - Sonoma-Marin Bounty. I have come to the conclusion that what elevates these international hot spot’s breads is their outstanding butters that go along with them.  In the past few years though, there has been a profusion of new local butters. So I called the crew together recently to test them out: A thorough Sonoma County bread and butter tasting, just to see.

So those groovy Guerneville Gators are back in school, so be sure to exercise caution along the roadways and bus stop areas, as our youth are sometimes hard to see from the inside of our vehicles; SLOW DOWN and be AWARE!

I love September! For me I can just feel that change is around the corner. We start to think about the many fall time events and slow down a little.

Summer is slipping by soooo fast, as it always does. I hope you are all enjoying each and every day finding time to just laze around. Creating summertime fun, tending to the house, the garden, packing for trips, visits from family and friends, concerts, beach time, art shows, river time, summer camps, festivals that are favorites – how does one fit it all in and also relax!!

Algae bloom in the lower reaches of the Russian River has been showing itself in alarming abundance this summer. Areas where in the past algae would typically line the shoreline gravel beaches, have seen the bloom cover the entire river surface from shore to shore. The areas above Bridgehaven up to Sheephouse Creek were especially bad.

For a groovy treat this summer, be sure to enjoy the Russian River Wienery, which is a mobile hot dog stand that’s been frequented by residents of all ages over the past two years!

With great weather heading into fall, it’s the perfect time to get out on your bike. Living here in Sonoma County we are blessed with many different choices. Depending on your mood you can pick from rolling vineyards, steep climbs or twisty coastal roads. One thing I also take into consideration is the location of the ride.

Staying local is hardly a drag when you’re minutes away from the Sonoma Coast, the Russian River and the Sonoma Valley. If summer finds you with no plans to jet off someplace new, no worries: Here are Regional Parks’ suggestions for finding adventure in your own backyard.

Whether you live here on the coast or you are a regular visitor you know the month of July brings the blessed fog onshore and cools us down. The gentle lines of the fog belt come and go, meander up and down the coast lingering with the most refreshing feeling you can imagine, especially when you come down the off the hot hills of the coast.

The world over, we use many different words to describe long distance walking. It’s an age-old tradition that roots all the way back to our ancient ancestors, who trekked across the land as a way of life, a simple exercise in survival.

A friend who knows I love gardens and gardening, introduced me to Sonoma Horticultural Nursery, a place of timeless beauty, jewel-toned clematis arbors and pathways that lead to a meadow, through groves of rhododendrons, unusual rare shade plants and an azalea and wisteria bordered pond

Last month I wrote about the problem we have been having in our area with crime. It still continues…numerous businesses have been broken into and merchandise is being shoplifted from quaint, locally owned stores.

BioBlitzes bring people together to document biodiversity in one place at one time, recording observations of plants and animals using smartphones or digital cameras and uploading results to the biodiversity recording and social networking platform iNaturalist (www.inaturalist.org). These events connect people of all backgrounds to the outdoors, inspire everyone to protect biodiversity, and at the same time generate invaluable data.

Deeply rooted in our minds and hearts is the comfort of a bonfire. It brings out all what came before us and creates thoughts and visions of what lies ahead. I for one can gaze into a campfire for hours. Camping and sitting around the warmth of that campfire with friends and/or family ties us together. To share stories. To tell ‘Tall Tales”. To sing. To create your own fire dance.

I try to keep this column on the “up” side, try to talk about fun and positive happenings in our community, but recently, this area has experienced quite a bit of the bad and it’s time for it to stop! We all need to stay vigilant at watching out for each other, be aware of what’s happening around us, in our neighborhoods and in town; keep each other as well as the Sheriff, informed.

2018 Summer Outdoor Concert Guide for Sonoma County

2018-05-30May 30, 2018

In the summer of 2016 I planned an over-the-top bicycle camping trip for my family. I had arranged for a friend to transport the three of us, Renee my wife, Trinity my then 9-year-old, myself, and all our gear to Santa Cruz. We had planned to ride down Highway 1 hugging the coast through Monterey, Carmel, Big Sur, San Simeon, and finish in San Luis Obispo.

The Aztecs, the last of the great pre-Colombian native civilizations adored the avocado and made “bitter water” from ground coca beans and spices. They incorporated the areas older and newer cultures, along with their agricultural methods, in the mid-15th century.

Last month my family flew to Connecticut for a long-awaited vacation. Our connection time in Chicago was supposed to be 1 ½ hours, but due to “crew scheduling issues”, our flight was delayed an additional three hours. We did not arrive until 3 am (instead of 10 pm as scheduled). Do I have any “flight rights?”
