On Saturday, July 20, and Sunday, July 21, CIVIL WAR DAYS,  a two-day living history reenactment open to the public, gives visitors the opportunity to interact with the soldiers and civilians of the Civil War, getting a personal glimpse of the years 1861–1865 and a better understanding of the events that formed our country

With over 4 – 6 Million visitors traveling through Bodega Bay on Highway 1, sections of the road have deteriorated so much that, for the safety of motorists & bicyclists, two sections have immediately been reduced to a single lane.

This is what we call GOOD NEWS. Some of the roads getting funds are considered escape routes for emergencies. We have learned from our own fires and floods, as well as from neighboring counties, the consequences of not having roads in good condition that lead people out of harm's way. We also know how important good roads are for our tourist industry that supports thousands of Sonoma County residents. There are MANY reasons to improve roads.

Monte Rio has seen natural disaster before but this flood was a Big One. While many escaped unscathed, there were businesses and homes that experienced severe damage. But our community spirit is strong and we come together to help one another in times such as these.

UPDATE: The Marathon has been postponed for now. Representatives from the marathon will be at the meeting on Sunday, March 31st as planned.

The 13.8-mile marathon, has not met with local praise and support because the plan disrupts the only road for access to residences and businesses at the tail end of tourist season. The original plan called for shutting off the entire highway and that has been revised to closing sections at a time as the runners make their way down the coast.

The atmospheric river that began Monday February 25 and lasted through February 27 is one for the books. Record rains flooded our local waterways. The Laguna de Santa Rosa and Russian River swelled to historic heights; the Russian River peaked at 45.4 feet late Wednesday night, clocking in at the worst flood since 1995. 2,600 houses and dozens of businesses were under water. 3,700 citizens were evacuated. Mudslides buckled roads throughout west county, cutting off neighborhoods from their larger communities. Roadways washed out and flooded, putting us two steps back after beginning to make small gains in improving our infamous pot-holed roadways. First responders worked around the clock, making swift water rescue after swift water rescue, risking their own lives to ensure the safety of others.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s the North Pacific Coast Railroad (NPCRR) carried passengers and freight from Sausalito to Cazadero, north of the Russian River. In 2019, the old NPCRR right-of-way exists as disparate sections of paved trail, dirt trail, and road – but someday the entire route could be linked together to create a continuous path: the NPCRR Heritage Trail. It would be a path through history and the beautiful, varied landscapes of Marin and Sonoma Counties. For Part 1 of our Heritage Trail exploration we traveled from Sausalito to Corte Madera. We start Part 2 at Menke Park in Corte Madera near the north portal of the Alto Tunnel, where a tranquil paved multi-use path, screened by trees and bushes, leads northward to Baltimore Park.

This article is the first in a series tracing the route of the old North Pacific Coast Railroad north to the Russian River and beyond. This railroad was a key link that helped shape the development of the North Bay. Today, its route represents not only a travel back through time, but a unique way to experience Marin and Sonoma Counties.  EcoRing, a green travel organization in the North Bay, advocates stitching together existing pathway segments and extending the route on publically owned portions of the original route to the Russian River.  For more information visit www.ecoring.org.

I credit the Sonoma Overlook Trail, and now also the contiguous Montini Preserve, for adding years to my life (too early to tell, though). This is because hiking became what I would do for daily cardiovascular exercise.
