The inspiration for Osmosis was born in Japan the day I took my first enzyme bath in the spring of 1984.  As the healing warmth of the bath enveloped my entire body, I was relieved of a crushing nerve pain that had plagued my body for months. At the same time, I dropped into an indescribable experience of sensing the entire universe like never before. As a minuscule part of this journey, a vivid picture of a healing sanctuary with the enzyme bath at the core surrounded by meditative Japanese style gardens and gracious hospitality flashed before my minds eye. From this remarkable moment, I knew it was my calling to bring the Japanese enzyme bath back to West County.

Held on a rural ranch, a few miles inland from the spectacular Sonoma Coast, the Bodega Seafood, Art & Wine Festival celebrates year twenty-five this summer. Sophisticated yet down-home, it’s garnered the reputation of being one of the premier art, wine, beer and food festivals in California. This annual benefit attracts thousands of foodies, art aficionados, wine and beer connoisseurs and music lovers to picturesque Watts Ranch in the village where Alfred Hitchcock once filmed his classic thriller, The Birds. The festival is a food lover’s dream, especially for people who love seafood. Non-fish eaters will have no trouble finding delicious vegetarian options, meat, chicken and sweet treats galore.

These days, climbers often learn basic skills at an indoor climbing gym or through the mentorship process as experienced climbers train their friends at the crag. Most of the tens of thousands of climbers in North America today will never even own a rock hammer, and that’s a good thing.

Beauty abounds everywhere while hiking the Sonoma Coast Kortum Trail from the ocean vistas, crashing waves, glorious sunsets & scenic hiking trails. Oh yes, there are some famous rocks there too!

Sunset Rocks, also known as the Mammoth Rub, stand tall in the vista. Take a deep breath and feel the peace that settles over you while in their presence. Their striking height and tumbling rocks draw you to them.

The "tidying up" movement is the current rage, but Autumn was way ahead of the game, my game anyway.  The nugget was to unburden me in the physical sense, and it manifested with a download of tasks to perform. It started with cleaning the garage about five years ago. Following the next juicy urge, I bought a 30-foot RV and guess what?! My new bus feels chock-full of portableness.Stepping into it gives me goosebumps, chills, and waves of happiness.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s the North Pacific Coast Railroad (NPCRR) carried passengers and freight from Sausalito to Cazadero, north of the Russian River. In 2019, the old NPCRR right-of-way exists as disparate sections of paved trail, dirt trail, and road – but someday the entire route could be linked together to create a continuous path: the NPCRR Heritage Trail. It would be a path through history and the beautiful, varied landscapes of Marin and Sonoma Counties. For Part 1 of our Heritage Trail exploration we traveled from Sausalito to Corte Madera. We start Part 2 at Menke Park in Corte Madera near the north portal of the Alto Tunnel, where a tranquil paved multi-use path, screened by trees and bushes, leads northward to Baltimore Park.

This article is the first in a series tracing the route of the old North Pacific Coast Railroad north to the Russian River and beyond. This railroad was a key link that helped shape the development of the North Bay. Today, its route represents not only a travel back through time, but a unique way to experience Marin and Sonoma Counties.  EcoRing, a green travel organization in the North Bay, advocates stitching together existing pathway segments and extending the route on publically owned portions of the original route to the Russian River.  For more information visit www.ecoring.org.

I credit the Sonoma Overlook Trail, and now also the contiguous Montini Preserve, for adding years to my life (too early to tell, though). This is because hiking became what I would do for daily cardiovascular exercise.
