Since 2004, my husband Doug and I have owned Beekind Honey in Sebastopol. We opened the shop in a very tiny portion of where it exists today. Doug had been beekeeping for seven years when we opened the store, I as always, the beekeeper’s keeper, was convinced that this amazing local honey that Doug and other local Sonoma County beekeepers were collecting had great unique value.

I write this as a concerned constituent of the marijuana community in Sonoma County. Having worked with several industry leaders and businesses, I am deeply concerned about the well-being of Sonoma County’s marijuana industry and understand the importance of protecting small-scale farmers. The medical-marijuana industry may soon lose its protection from federal recourse by December 8th if Congress has not approved a new budget including the Rohrabacher-Farr Amendment.

It’s impossible not to note the devastation of not only the wineries lost, the homes and, indeed neighborhoods raised in their totality by this year’s fires. One of the few thoughts that I’ve had driving through Sonoma is noticing fire break lines where the vineyards are and where homes and businesses are no longer.

This is a personal account of the Cannabis Advisory Board Meeting held at the Permit Resource Management Department(PRMD) in Santa Rosa on Wednesday 9/27/17. I was delayed in writing this because of the fire, but I believe my personal perspective is of value to readers.

Even before the smoke cleared,
people were talking about rebuilding Sonoma County.

But what does that look like?
Who will make the decisions?
How can we all become stronger together?

It dawned on me that I’ve neglected to talk about barbera and, to a lesser extent, sangiovese. I thought it might be interesting to try something new and encourage people to step outside what might be their red varietal of choice.

Designers specialize in creating beautiful gardens and landscapes, choosing plant materials and aggregate elements, but do not necessarily install or maintain the gardens they design. They often work in concert with partner professionals that do the installation and maintenance.

Six limited liability companies (LLCs) have applied for permits to grow cannabis within the Bennett Valley Area Plan. The well-funded promoters of the marijuana industry told the Board of Supervisors in late 2016 that most applicants for permits under the Sonoma County Cannabis Land Use Ordinance would be “mom and pop” farmers who have been growing cannabis for years.

The number of applications in Petaluma has jumped from one to SIX commercial (up to 1 acre) cannabis farms within a three-mile radius. The county has not indicated that they are thinking about the concentration of cannabis in our area, nor are they addressing the cumulative impact of these applications on our area's overall water, traffic, safety, etc. Our area is under siege. This is a huge problem and we are planning to address it with David Rabbit at our next meeting.
