Occidental Oriented by MacKenzie Nekton - July 2017

Oh, summer is here, and the heat is upon us! It has been such a warm few weeks! I’ve been experimenting with hot-weather outfits, since when I arrive in Boston in early September, I’m sure it will still be pretty warm. It’s been fun! My hair is finally long enough to braid and/or put up! Go me! The up-dos have been super helpful at work, where it’s been really hot. I’ve been working at Wildflour in Graton, and it is warm in there! I think it might be the tin roof, or maybe the giant oven in back. Either way, it’s very warm in there. Despite the heat, I’m having a great time. Everyone there is super funny and nice, and they pay well. It’s a great job. Shameless plug: come get some bread and tip me lots!

The SRJC is offering a free Older Adults Program class at the Occidental Community CenterMixed Media Intuitive Arts. The class is focused on experimentation, fun, and community building, and you don’t need any experience to join. The class isn’t critique-based, so there’s no need to worry! It runs from Tuesday, June 20th to August 15th from 10am to 12:30pm.Maria Gonzalez-Blue is teaching it, and you can contact her for more information at hummingbird@monitor.net or at 7078232889. Did I mention it’s free?

Also at the Occidental Community Center, Lizzy Long’s West County Bootcamp is adding a Monday evening class to its schedule. The class is from 4:30 to 5:30, and it’s continued existence is dependent on attendance, so if that’s a good time for you, please go!

In other health related news, its probably time for you to go to the dentist. You’re supposed to go every six months, so it’s probably time for you to go. Friendly reminder! CallDr. Andriy Shevscuk (our local Occidental dentist) at 7078742447. Plus, they have an awesome new tooth statue.

It’s time for a beloved Occidental tradition: the Occidental Fireman’s Bar-b-que! It’s on Sunday, July 15th. As always, there will be games and a jumpy house, and loads of great food. It’s a great way to spend an afternoon, catch up with old friends and neighbors. It’s great fun! I’ll be bringing Devin and my appetite!

On Saturday, July 8th, from 8pm to 6pm, Juanito Pascual will be coming to the Occidental Center for the Arts. He’s a flamenco guitarist, known for his organic blend of traditional and contemporary flamenco. NPR called him “One of the hottest flamenco guitarists to emerge in recent years,” and his hair sure deserves a compliment! Also, so does his music, but he does have good hair! Juanito came to Occidental last year with his Juanito PascualNew Flamenco Trio, and it was awesome. There will be fine refreshments, including wine and beer, available for sale. Tickets are $18 advance and $20 at the door. Reservations are advised,q because it’s going to be really cool. If you have questions, call 707-874-9392, or email info@occidentalcenterforthearts.org.

I can’t wait to enjoy summer, and I hope you enjoy yours too! Until next month, have fun!
