Film and Theater - Love and the Oscars - by Don Gibble - February 2018

Welcome to February, where we celebrate love and Oscar nominations! If you remember in my column last month I was hoping Sam Rockwell would win best supporting actor for his work in

This Valentine’s Day weekend I suggest taking your sweetheart to the movies and catch one of the nominees for best picture which include “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”,“The Shape Of Water”and for you Meryl Streep fans, “The Post”. Meryl broke her own record with receiving her 21st nomination! Steven Spielberg was snubbed for his direction of “The Post” but made room for Greta - best supporting actor Gerwig, director of “Lady Bird”. This is her first time directing a film and it would be awesome if she won. Other snubs include Armie Hammer for“Call Me By Your Name” and Holly Hunter for her brilliant work in“The Big Sick”.

Movies opening this month include “Winchester” starring Helen Mirren. If you have ever visited the Winchester Mystery House you’ll definitely want to catch this movie. It opens February 2nd. “Fifty Shades Freed” opens February 9th. Hopefully this sequel is better than the last one. “The 15:17 to Paris” also opens February 9th and is directed by Clint Eastwood who recently turned 87 years old. God bless him! For the kids, “Peter Rabbit” also opens February 9th and stars Rose Byrne and Daisy Ridley. Opening February 16th is the long awaited “Black Panther” starring Chadwick Boseman and Michael B Jordan. Opening February 23rd is “Game Night” starring Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams. Also opening February 23rd is “War With Grandpa” starring one of my favorite actors, Robert DeNiro.

For my live theater fans it’s a busy month starting with“Honky Tonk Angels” at 6th Street Playhouse.(READ Akexa Chipman’s REVIEW) If you pic up the paper after Feb 4th - you missed it! so you should call 707 523-4185 to see if there are still tickets.
