Bodega Bay Beat by Joan Poulos

MOTHER NATURE DELIVERED ANOTHER PUNCH in February to the already soaked Sonoma Coast.  Were we prepared?  Did we learn from last year’s major storm that certain roads & creeks needed some TLC?  Valley Ford Road, the main route for residents and visitors going to the Coast, flooded again. Highway 1 is crumbling into the ocean in many places. Even our Evacuation Route on Bay Hill closed.  Up to 6 million visitors to Bodega Bay a year doesn’t generate enough revenue to fix our roads?

The Coast MAC and Lower Russian River MAC is established to advise the Board of Supervisors and other County decision makers on local planning and management decisions relating to their respective regions, to provide a regular forum for citizen participation in the formation of advisory recommendations on those decisions, and to provide a bridge for communication between the County and local residents and businesses, and the general public on local government decisions affecting these communities.

It was a dark and stormy day and even the newspaper can’t get thru.  Many of the roads are closed, and meetings have been cancelled. Watching the flood waters under the bridge in Bodega makes one realize how tentative our security is. We are grateful to all those who work to assure our safety; floods and all. There are serious issues before the community now.  Some of the various groups, along with Efren Carillo, are planning a community-wide race—along Highway One.  Many of the locals are opposed, especially those who have a business location along Highway One and who fear that their customers won’t be able to get into the shop, store or restaurant.   Some of the success will depend upon the weather. Many citizens  showed up for the meeting at the firehouse about what to do WHEN THE BIG ONE COMES .The attending people listened with great attentiveness. After all, we DO live right on a fault. We are grateful to those in the community who continue to urge us to take safety measures and who take seriously the possibility of a major calamity.

Residents of Bodega Bay have lost two of their pioneer citizens. Fisherman’s Chapel lost one of its pioneer ministers, Rev. Richard Wilcox and the community lost Lois Boos, who was a long time Bodega Bay citizen and active in the Grange and particularly in the Flea Market. Lois’ daughter, Shirley Hughes and her mother were active members of the Bodega Bay community. Both survivors put together nice programs for their survivors to honor the decedents; one in Petaluma and one in Bodega Bay.

This is the time we “fish or cut bait” about voting for our candidates of choice.  I received my ballot just as I left for the first of my hospital visits. I wanted to be sure to get it mailed in a timely fashion, so I voted and mailed my ballot. I had followed all the campaigns carefully, so this is how I voted:

  1. Most of the Democratic officials that represent me are doing a good job. I pretty much voted a complete affirmation of them. I voted for Newsome, too. His having been a Mayor is pretty good training for becoming Governor.
  2. The propositions caused me more angst. I carefully studied the pros and cons, and here is how I ended up:...
