Want phenomenal pastries? Head to Rohnert Park’s 9 Islands Bakery

Looking for something new this holiday season? Lucky for you, there’s generally plenty of parking too. That can be a deal breaker, especially in this traffic laden season. Convenience aside, step into another country by way of this lovely little corner market. There aren’t enough places like this around here.

Nine Islands Bakery is a treat unlike any other in the County. You will find such unique items true to Portugal, that you’ll probably start introducing all your friends to the fun tastes. The owner-operator-baker, Liduina Sousa, is from São Miguel, the largest island of the Azores, a Portuguese archipelago.

She makes many delicious baked goods. The fresh flavor is unbeatable. It’s definitely worth a try and if you’re like me, you will have to keep coming back for more. I need my regular intake of certain yummies, like the show-stopping chocolate flan macaroon. Tasty and creative - it’s definitely my favorite. The sweet breads are also amazing and versatile.

In addition to the pastries, breads and other fresh goods, you will find a nice selection of goods you might find in a Portuguese grocery. There are refrigerated, frozen and shelf-stable items to choose from and enjoy later from home. I’m a fan of the passionfruit soda, linguica, Pão de Queijo (cheese rolls) and quince jam.

One major thing to remember when entering a new space is to keep an open mind in exploring a different culture. Connecting through food is one of the greatest ways to learn more about someone. Be curious and ask questions. Try to avoid placing judgments based on your own culture or social upbringing. Get out and try it!

Find this gem at 1 Padre Parkway Suite D, Rohnert Park, CA. Hours are Tuesday to Friday: 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. Saturday: 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. They are closed on Sunday and Monday. The next closest Portuguese Bakery is about 90 miles Southeast. You have nothing to lose!
