Before Fire Strikes: How to Prepare Your Home and Create a Resilient Rural Landscape

Aug 22, 2018

UC Cooperative Extension Sonoma County, with sponsorship from American Ag Credit, is presenting Before Fire Strikes: How to prepare your home & create a resilient rural landscape, an all-day symposium led by Cooperative Extension staff (9:00AM to 4:30PM with lunch) on Friday, August 24, 2018 at Shone Farm. UC Cooperative Extension is committed to helping build a more resilient community through our research and educational workshops on natural resource management pre/post wildfire.

Much of Sonoma County is considered a high fire-hazard environment, consisting of urban areas and communities adjacent to wildlands as well as privately owned range and forestlands. Our ability to live more safely in California’s high fire-hazard environment depends upon our pre-fire activities. This workshop is designed for both urban/suburban homeowners AND rangeland/forest property owners. Attendees will learn how wildfires operate in Sonoma County’s wildland urban interface, how to maintain a fire safe community, and what natural resource management strategies best improve the survivability of people, property, and homes.

During lunch the audience will have a dialogue with California State Senator Mike McGuire to brainstorm policy recommendations and concerns. After a lunch break, attendees will break out into two tracks depending on whether they are a larger property owner (with rangelands and/or forest) or urban or suburban homeowners; the topics addressed in the afternoon tracks are:

Urban & Suburban Homeowners

  • Home hardening & defensible space protocols
  • Produce safety citizen science initiative
  • Tree evaluation

Range & Forest property owners

  • Prescriptive fire & grazing as a management tool
  • Sudden Oak Death and fire
  • Potential funding sources for land management practice

Tickets include coffee, breakfast snacks and a catered lunch.

Pre-register through August 23, tickets $15. For more information and to register, visit:
