Spread holiday cheer to seniors through the mail

Send Our Seniors Mail program encourages community members to uplift seniors

Are you at home with spare time? Are your children looking for a craft to benefit others? The Sonoma County Libraryā€™s Send Our Seniors Mail program encourages kindness and support for elders in the community during the holiday season and beyond. Months of social distancing have been especially isolating for seniors and this new program is a way for anyone to send artwork and letters of encouragement to seniors in need of human connection.

"Iā€™m glad that [the Sonoma County Library] has this project that will boost our residents at this time of pandemic. They really need some encouraging letters,ā€ said Monette Monday, Resident Program Director at Arbol Residences of Santa Rosa.

Visit sonomalibrary.org/services/send-our-seniors-mail for a list of participating facilities and addresses. Community members of all ages are invited to send cards, postcards, drawings and letters. Make sure your mail is legible, in large print and handwritten. Keep your message positive, kind and thoughtful. Staff at the facilities then distribute the mail to residents who would benefit from positive outreach. This is a one-way mail program, so please do not include requests for response.

Sonoma County Library Librarian Allison Palmer, a member of the Send Our Seniors Mail team, said, "As we head into the holiday season, we want to create connections and reach out to the members of our community who are especially isolated due to COVID. A simple gesture in the form of an uplifting card or drawing can mean so much right now."

Addresses of senior facilities will be added to the Send Our Seniors Mail webpage as they become available. If you know of a potential Send Our Seniors Mail facility, please email the library at sendourseniorsmail@sonomalibrary.org.
