Sonoma County Democratic Party Endorsements 2020

Sonoma County Democratic Party Endorsement of Measure I Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit District

The Sonoma County Democratic Party has unanimously endorsed Measure I in the March 3 Primary election. In 2008, Sonoma and Marin Counties took the first step to establish a green transportation system that has taken traffic off a severely congested Highway 101. So far, the train runs from Santa Rosa to the Larkspur Ferry, connecting Sonoma County to San Francisco. The system is designed to connect Windsor, Healdsburg, and Cloverdale residents in future phases.

The SMART Rail System, still in its infancy, is providing a green alternative to the difficult commute through the Novato Narrows on Highway 101. We also take note of the opposition of one woman, Molly Flater, who is spending a million dollars to defeat this measure. Why a member of a prominent developer family would spend such a large amount of money opposing this measure, raises questions that were troublesome for the Democratic Party.

“Since the SMART train began operations, a little over two years ago, over 1,600,000passengers have used the train. In the first full month with the new train schedule and the opening of the Larkspur Station connecting to the Golden Gate Ferry, SMART’s ridership is up 26% for January 2020 when compared to ridership in January 2019. This is a major step to address global warming by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Local Democrats have supported this forward-facing transportation system since it was proposed and we know that it represents the future for Sonoma and Marin communities as we address the serious challenges to thwart Global Warming,” said Local Democratic Party Chair, Pat Sabo. “We look forward to completion of the entire system, all the way to Cloverdale. ”This year the Sonoma Dems will be working for Yes on Measure I in a variety of ways, including precinct walking, direct mail, and phone banking from our Coordinated Campaign Headquarters in Santa Rosa.
