Sonoma County ARTSTART Call to Create Shelter in Place

Jayne Burns, Board President ArtStart

Artstart of Santa Rosa has launched a call for teen artists to express visually, the personal, social, political and global effects of the pandemic crisis.

As this situation affects each of us differently, we invite the voices of those age 14-20 to offer their unique perspective. From detailed paintings, to simple sketches, all levels welcome. May this exercise offer a productive and healing activity. We will share the artwork, not only online, but eventually to be woven into large, collaged mural designs that will include pieces of all the submissions.

Artists need to take a photo and send the image to info@artstart.us

MISSION of Artstart: Since 1999, we have provided job training, mentoring and stimulating arts work experience for youth, while creating publicly and privately commissioned artwork for our Sonoma County, California community.

To give you an example, our first sketches arrived yesterday. And check here as we add more: https://www.artstart.us/gallery-shelter-in-place

Please share the call with any teens you may know.

CALL TO CREATE:

SHELTER IN PLACE : A Visual Portrayal

Description of Project:

Through this project we will connect and engage with our youth communities by reaching out with these questions:

How do you currently see your role in your community?

Where do you find hope, strength and compassion?

What are the feelings of yourself and those around you?

How do you see this moment in history?

Submit sketches, drawings and paintings that visually portray the answers to these questions.

Parts of all submitted sketches will be woven into the designs for a large community mural reflecting the unique perspective of our 14 to 20 year- old population.

We are at the threshold of change; this extraordinary experience offers an opportunity to reflect and express. Let art comfort and heal, providing a crossroads to bring people together in a new way.

A collaged mural painting will be one of the greatest forms of representation, to spark conversations about who we are, what we stand for and how we will be remembered.
