Board of Supervisors Receives Sheriff Freitas’ Retirement Notice, Will Take Immediate Action to Ensure Seamless Transition

The Sonoma County Board of Supervisors were notified on July 5th that Sheriff Steve Freitas will retire effective August 1, 2017.  The office of Sheriff-Coroner is a publicly elected position and Sheriff Freitas’ term was set to expire in December 2018.  Assistant Sheriff Rob Giordano will fulfill the duties of the Sheriff until an appointment is made by the Board of Supervisors.  The Board of Supervisors has the authority to temporarily fill the Sheriff-Coroner position for the remainder of the term of office per Government Code §25304.  An appointment will be made at a future Board meeting in open session.   A follow-up press release will be distributed when a Board meeting date has been selected. Supervisor David Rabbitt said, “I thank Sheriff Freitas for his dedicated service to our community.  He was able to balance the many needs of our diverse and growing community.  I wish him and his family well in his retirement and look forward to working with the Sheriff’s Office to continue providing superior law enforcement services.”

A message from Sheriff Steve Freitas: Today I am announcing my retirement as the Sheriff of Sonoma County effective August 1st. I have struggled with some medical issues for more than a year now and it is time to do what is best for my family and my health.

It has been a privilege to be the Sheriff for the past six and a half years and to have worked at the Sheriff’s Office for so long. I will always love the Sheriff’s Office and I’m proud of the work they do for the people of Sonoma County.

I have asked the Board of Supervisors to appoint Assistant Sheriff Rob Giordano as Sheriff. Rob is absolutely the best person for the job until the public elects a new Sheriff next year. He has committed to not run for Sheriff in the upcoming election, so his appointment should have no effect on the people’s vote for the next Sheriff. I have complete confidence in Rob, his abilities, and his temperament to be the Sheriff.

I would like to personally thank all the people and organizations who have supported me and the Sheriff’s Office over the years…Thank you!

My best wishes and prayers go out to everyone at the Sheriff’s Office, the County, all the agencies we work with and the people of Sonoma County.
