Democracy In Action – District 2 Elections for the Democratic Party Central Committee (DSCC) Elections

The governing body of the California Democratic Party is the Democratic State Central Committee (DSCC). The DSCC is made up of approximately 2,800 – 3,200 members (“Delegates”). 14 delegates are elected through Assembly Districts (AD), (7 women and 7men), these delegates are elected at Assembly District Election Meetings (ADEMs) held in each of the 80 Assembly Districts in January of odd-numbered years. Go to

On January 12th, Assembly District 2 represented by Assem blyman Jim Woods had their Assembly Delegates Elections. Those elected will serve for two years on the Central Committee for the California Democratic Party representing District 2 that includes parts of Santa Rosa and all the way up the coast to Eureka,

In the past the turn outs by registered Democrats for these elections tend to be small. This year was different due to the fact that the election was held in Santa Rosa and the outreach of a newly formed group, “California Rises Slate 700 votes were cast. Mary Watts, one of the organizers of the group and candidate for a seat on the Executive Board explained why the group was formed. “Not many people in Sonoma County have been represented or participated at the event, and their goal was to both advise people that the election was taking place as well as encouraging diversity.” Well, it worked, and as a Santa Rosa resident for over twenty five years this was the first time I was made aware of the meeting and therefore was able to cast my vote.

Unfortunately I do not have the results of the election by press time and will give you the results/winners in March’s issue. Since this process happens every two years I wanted folks to be aware and prepared to participate in the 2021 election, If I had known earlier I might have considered being on the ballot. February is Black History Month – Library Events

I came across a great educational program for children happening at the Central Library in Santa Rosa: The, Black History Month, “Who Am I?”- Challenge. Ana Dawe, Supervisor of the Children’s Room created an interactive poster with six individual descriptions of important African American people. The children read a description and try to guess who that person is. The answer is found by lifting the flap where the name is revealed. “I wanted a fun and simple way for the children to learn about African American History,” Dawe said. The poster will be on display from Feb. 1st to the end of the month. The library is located at 211 E St, Santa Rosa. For additional information go to https://sonomacounty.libcal.com/event/4707758.

Also at the library for black history month will be the Black History Month Film Series & Discussion: "I Am Not Your Negro",Saturday, February 16 — 2:00pm - 4:00pm. Master filmmaker Raoul Peck envisions the book James Baldwin never finished. The result is a radical, up-to-the-minute examination of race in America, using Baldwin's original words and flood of rich archival material. In 1979, James Baldwin wrote a letter to his literary agent describing his next project, Remember This House. The book was to be a revolutionary, personal account of the lives and successive assassinations of three of his close friends — Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. At the time of Baldwin's death in 1987, he left behind only thirty completed pages of his manuscript.https://sonomacounty.libcal.com/event/5066472

Love in Action, Celebrating the Legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr

This year folks gather at the Santa Rosa High School to celebrate the legacy of Dr. King. The program was dedicated to Committee Member and Educator, Patricia Clark for her decades of service in charge of the Poster Contest and the Children’s Program. The key note speaker was Youth Advocate, Morris Turner. This year’s program included, student presenters, a poster contest and a special historical perspective was presented by Tina Rogers. Also included was the opportunity to find out about many of the nonprofit organizations in our community. See more photos here.

To continue the celebration on the following day, “A Day On Not A Day Off”, a day of service coordinated by the Community Baptist Church took place. This year a group of sewers gathered at the church to sew sanitary napkins for young girls in Uganda. In rural Uganda, many women and girls struggle to pay for food or education, let alone menstrual pads. www.globalgiving.org/projects/girl-support-project-in-uganda-africa/ According to the coordinator of the activity, visiting from Ugandan, Namirembe Phionah, “Young girls are so embarrassed and ashamed when they are menstruating they miss school and it makes them feel inferior to boys” .

A Valentine Story New Exhibition at the Charles M. Schulz Museum

Behind Peanuts -The Little Red-Haired Girl, explores the real-life story behind Charlie Brown’s unrequited love. First introduced on November 19, 1961, the Little Red-Haired Girl is the classmate crush of Charlie Brown, whose countless attempts to woo her continuously backfires, lending to the relatable storyline of first love angst and disappointment. She would continue to be the object of Charlie Brown’s affection throughout the run of the strip, though she is never named and seen only once in silhouette.

The back-story of this character is the story of Schulz’s own first love, Donna Johnson Wold, a red-haired coworker Schulz courted while working at Art Instruction Schools in Minneapolis in 1949 and 1950. The exhibition also celebrates Schulz’s clever development of her off-panel presence—an element that kept Peanuts fans guessing over the years. The exhibit takes place from February 1 through August 4, 2019 at the museum located at: 2301 Hardies Lane, Santa Rosa, On February 14, little or not so little people with red hair will be admitted free. Women’s March – Santa Rosa 2019

A crowd of 4500 people gathered at Courthouse Square in Santa Rosa for the 2019 Women’s March on January 19. A special shout out to coordinator Leslie Graves, for organizing the event and to all the volunteers, speakers, nonprofit organization, and sponsors. This year I had the honor of holding the banner along with Dr. Jacqueline Lawrence, Ms. Sonoma County, Tyler – Avery Lewis and Ms. Sonoma County’s outstanding teen, Pinkeo Phongsa. What was so inspiring to me was seeing the many families with young children and the youth that showed up. I was particularly delighted to see to see how many men actually showed up wearing pussycat hats. See More photos here.

The best sign I saw being carried said, “I’m no longer accepting the things I cannot change, I am changing the things I cannot accept”.

Something to Think About: “The greatest happiness of life is the conviction that we are loved; loved for ourselves, or rather, loved in spite of ourselves.” Victor Marie Hugo as a French poet, novelist, and dramatist of the Romantic Movement. Outside of France, his most famous works are the novels Les Misérables, 1862, and The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, 1831. Happy Valentine’s Day everyone, from my heart to yours.
