With political and cultural tensions rising in America, it is important to share our experiences in a way that is respectful and empowering. Fire Circle Theater was founded by friends who met at Santa Rosa Junior College with a shared vision of positive artistic expression.
The ‘ReVerberation’ festival offers varied perspectives through poetry, music, performance art, visual media, and interactive workshops. From oral history testimony to vibrant art from adults with special needs and formerly incarcerated persons, education directorRush Cosgrove assures that “we hope by shining light on the broad experience of the community we can see each other more as human, facing common human problems.”
The doors of Spreckels Performing Arts Center open at 5:00pm, offering time to peruse the visual exhibitions. Shortly after, workshops will be available, including guided writing reflections andTom Beland’s insights into cartoon drawing. “We will be flexible, depending on what emerges” Cosgrove explains.“Effective pedagogy is always based on the local conditions.”The lobby’s open mic will start at 6:00pm, and the main stage show an hour later.
Cosgrove recommends staying for the performance.“What I hope is that for every person in the audience there is some piece that hits them where they think…’maybe I don’t agree with it, but I respect that person and maybe it’s okay that we don’t agree on everything’… I think one of the testimonies of the gay veterans will do this for a lot of the audience.”
Fire Circle Theater also facilitates an ongoing Writers Club that is a safe space “to investigate our feelings and thoughts…to better understand ourselves” according to Cosgrove. There are cooperative games, session themes, poetry, and even Socratic discussions.
The festival’s incorporation of Sonoma County’s rich tapestry of lifestyles celebrates our community, offering the opportunity to grow together and as individuals.
Open Mic submissions are still being accepted; if you are interested, visit the festival page on the Fire Circle Theater website.
