Penngrove Station by Lyndi Brown - June 2018

You know you’re in a small town when the big news is Palace of Fruit’s new green paint job. “The shade is a fruit color, Prickly Pear Cactus,” Gina Ebertus said. “Last time we painted, we asked customers to vote for different colors, and they were all adamant it had to stay green.” That’s what a landmark is, right? Always reliably the same.

Food Centric in Penngrove

Faron’s at Mack’s is serving lunch, appetizers & dinner, seven days, at Mack’s Bar & Grill. Yep the same Faron Bailey from Faron’s New Orleans Style BBQ out Bodega Avenue. He’s also got a weekend breakfast. We’re talkin’ hush puppies, shrimp-n-grits, BBQ, wild boar sausage sando, shrimp or oyster poboy and more. Dine in or take out.

Yanni’s Sausage changed hands to Yia Yia’s Café and it’s open! Taste the Gyro, burgers & dogs, Greek salad, vegan lentil soup, and a GBLT (Greek bacon, lettuce tomato with basil puree, mayo or tzatziki), or Popi’s Flaming Cheese (Saganaki cheese on grilled pita or Italian bread).

Penngrove Market is set to open in June. Sofia Lim, former owner of Taverna Sofia in Healdsburg, is managing the kitchen for Culinary Director, Joe Ferraro. Together they’ll offer the best of local and seasonal foods. The market itself is a beautiful space, with wood flooring, racks yet to be filled with groceries, and a coffee bar that will also have wine and beer for enjoying on the front patio. ArtistMarla Pederson painted a gorgeous mural of scattered orange flowers, sprinkled with names of community members who helped revive the market. We can’t wait!

Still, the hands-down favorite for breakfast, lunch and community nexus is JavAmore Cafe.Penngrove is blessed.

Deja Blue: The Upscale Goodwill Opens

I’m a habitué of thrift and consignment stores. It’s the thrill of the chase, and I keep the cycle alive by donating goods, too. I spotted a Deja Blue sign, next to the Ross store in Plaza South at 141 North McDowell Blvd., Petaluma .The upscale boutique is the first of its kind in Sonoma County. It was beautifully organized, fresh, clean, spacious and arranged by color. They are powered by Goodwill, supporting the mission of job training. This store goes for quality items, and it shows. It’s open 7 days a week, 9 am – 8 pm and donations are accepted daily until 5 pm—bring the good stuff!
