43rd Annual
Penngrove Parade

Let’s Have Fun

The drive over Coleman Valley Road and up to Jenner is spectacular.

Last month I set a goal  “Just have some summer fun”. I spent a night at Point Reyes Hostel with 3 BFFs and hiked to Sky Camp the next day. Our lodging was in a family room in a tidy separate building (just $130!). It had two sets of bunk beds. Let’s just say thank you to Franny and Gale who kindly took the top bunks! With my visitor here for a week, I’ve seen more of Sonoma County than usual. As always, the drive over Coleman Valley Road and up to Jenner was spectacular. We hit it on a clear, warm, blue water day. And Armstrong Redwoods never fails to spark awe. We found Nightingale Breads open and satisfying as we came home through Forestville. At press time, we’re heading to Rivertown Revival for more revelry and fanciful costumes.

Parade Day Report

The 43rd annual Parade showcased all that’s good in Penngrove. A shout out is in order for Mary Carroll who orchestrated a wonderful All- American playlist for the bystanders. Her selection from 'Washington Post March" to "American Pie" kept us entertained before the big event.

Hubby Anthony Tusler didn’t see much of the Parade. He ran off when his best friend from high school, Robert Armstrong, rode by in a custom ’53 Chevy convertible with Sourdough Slim. Robert was playing git banjo with Sourdough on accordion, promoting their afternoon gig at Twin Oaks Roadhouse.

Just a couple mishaps: A woman’s small tractor lurched out of control, and she was taken to the hospital. Another freak accident happened when a horse threw a shoe into the crowd, hitting a girl in the head – but she was okay. It all sounds like a crazy cartoon, and we’re grateful the injured are healing.

The Parade was the largest ever, and we all enjoyed the BBQ and music that followed in Penngrove Park. After the parade everyone danced the afternoon away with Train Wreck Junction. Thank you to all the volunteers who make the parade happen, especially organizer Kim Hanson. The event is the largest fundraiser of the year for Penngrove Social Firemen, a nonprofit whose members  and supporters keep the park and clubhouse well maintained and open to the community.

The Sitting Room workshop – August 3

Join facilitator Sharon Bard to weave body awareness practices from various disciplines with musings from felt senses and imagery.  The workshop is titled “Gleaning from the Gut - An Embodied Writing Workshop”. Through gentle movement, group discussion, and writing, we’ll explore how a grounded yet spacious sense of being allows for greater aliveness and creativity.  Bring a lunch, journal or laptop, and an open mind. This workshop is a benefit for the Sitting Room. Suggested contribution $25.00 - $40.00. Contact Sharon at  with questions and/or to reserve a spot. From 10:00 am2:00 pm at The Sitting Room,  2025 Curtis Drive  Penngrove.
