Palm Drive Health Care District accepts the proposal from American Advanced Management Group

Despite challenges common to small rural hospitals and to our community, we are happy to announce that for the foreseeable future, we have our community hospital management agreement.

The Palm Drive Health Care District Board voted to keep the hospital open by accepting the proposal put forth by AAMG (American Advanced Management Group) to take over management of the former Palm Drive Hospital. AAMG will add a specialization in long-term acute care and will transition the Emergency Room to an Urgent Care Center.

We are all sad at the loss of the ER but the Urgent Care Center that is planned will provide higher-level care than is typical of a walk-in clinic, with all the lab and imaging services that one might find in an ER. We are confident that the new hospital model will continue to serve our community in making sure that we still have a place for our urgent medical needs. (This shift from ER to Urgent Care is anticipated to increase health care access for many of our community members, as Urgent Care costs much less than a trip to the ER through most insurance.)

The Surgical Department, ICU and all other services are to remain.

Our little hospital will be filling a deep need for the entire area by offering a place for those who need a longer hospitalization to get better. Instead of having many empty beds, there will likely be a waiting list of patients from larger hospitals wishing to transfer in for more specialized care. This means the hospital we have all worked so hard to support can soon be self-sustaining. In the event of a regional emergency, we have been assured that the hospital will still be a resource for our community, as we saw last October.

The voters passed Measure F in 2000 to continue to provide acute care (not LTAC), an emergency department (not simple urgent care) AND other medical services. AAMG and the District have agreed to terminate the ER and Acute care completely violating and obliterating the original intent of the district and its taxpayer support. SWMF doesn't have a problem with this? It is no longer your attractive little community hospital. Ambulances will be required to bypass (most of them do so anyway) this shell of a hospital (unless they are going to pick someone up to take them to a real hospital). The plan is to severely cut payroll - meaning either all staff takes a large cut in pay (not going to happen) or a good portion of the staff is laid off (the more likely scenario). They are already operating with minimal staffing requirements. There must be a method to your madness - it's just too bad that madness is going to affect a lot of good people waiting for settlement of an existing bankruptcy and future generations who are going to be paying the cost of the District's bad fiscal decisions long after we're all dead and gone and the hospital has itself turned to dust!
