Leslie Warren Remembered: Friends, Family Honor Active Monte Rio Community Member
Nov 1, 2018
Following a long illness that took her manual dexterity, her mobility and her voice — but not her joie de vivre — Leslie Warren passed away Oct. 2 in Monte Rio.
She is survived by her wife Lois Pearlman, her stepdaughter Emma Rose, her dog Rosie and her many, many friends.
Friends were the most important things in Leslie’s life, and she was excellent at making them and keeping them.
“I was astounded at how many of her college friends she had managed to stay in touch with over the years,” said Pearlman.
Leslie put her friendly nature to good use working as an advocate and coordinator of services for disabled adults at the California Department of Rehabilitation. She also served as a Workers Compensation catastrophic injury consultant with the Fred S. James insurance Company in Los Angeles. She had a B.A. degree from UC Berkeley and an M.A. in rehabilitation from San Francisco State University. In Monte Rio she owned and operated a vacation rental,The Big Yellow House.
She was a longtime volunteer for Pegasus Theater Company, where she made her stage debut as a singing reindeer in the annual Holiday Show, and a member of the North Coast Coalition for Palestine. During the time she lived on the lower Russian River, Leslie sang soprano with the River Choir. She also served on the Russian River Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and wrote stories for the Russian River Times.
Leslie managed to stay in her home until the very end, thanks to the excellent support offered by her caregivers Jenny Britton, Heather Litke, Jason Dubrovner, Shenna Lee, Lisa Nowlin, Debby San Angelo, Elsa Watley, Diane Moroni, and especially, Todd Campbell. She also received loving aid from her friends Darlene Kersnar, Liza Loop, Steve Baxman and his partner Gabrielle.
Employing the expertise she acquired as a healthcare advocate, Leslie collaborated with Pearlman on an advocacy handbook, How to Get What You Want without Really Dying.
