A Message from the New Healdsburg Mayor:

Happy New Year, Sonoma County! As the new mayor of Healdsburg, I’m excited about 2019 and our new City Council. Our Vice Mayor, Leah Gold was re-elected in the November 2018 election, and Evelyn Mitchell — who has extensive experience as a business consultant and as the board president of the Healdsburg Humane Society — joined our Council.

2018 was quite a year. We made some headway on affordable housing — a perennial need in Healdsburg and throughout Sonoma County. Healdsburg has exceeded the state-mandated requirement for affordable housing, and 2 percent of our transient-occupancy tax (TOT) is allocated towards an affordable housing fund. The 25-unit Healdsburg Gleapartments is the City’s latest affordable-housing project, and since its opening in November of last year, it has been fully occupied. I invite you to join me at the ribbon-cutting ceremony on February 11, from 4-5 p.m., at 1201 Grove Street, Healdsburg as we celebrate and welcome our new neighbors! Healdsburg also hosted many community events, services and programs in 2018. The City’s quarterly “Coffee with the City” and neighborhood “Community Conversations” events offered residents the opportunity to speak directly with our city manager and department directors. The City’s Community Services Department went all out to present the popular Tuesdays in the Plaza concert series and other events, such as Dia de los Muertos. The Healdsburg Senior Center also hosted a wide variety of events for residents of all ages, from art-exhibit receptions to day trips to San Francisco.

In addition, more than 400 Healdsburg kids (including my own) participated in the soccer league through the Community Center. Nearly every event hosted by the City includes activities for kids, which, as a father of two young children, has been one of my priorities since joining our council in 2016.

On the transportation front, Healdsburg once again earned a bronze-level distinction from the League of American Bicyclists for being a “Bicycle-Friendly City.” Healdsburg was the first City in Sonoma County to launch a bike-share program. Done in partnership with Zagster, the country’s largest bike-share provider, the program is available to our community and visitors to provide a healthy alternative to get from Point A to Point B. Leave the car at home or parked at the hotel -- the first 30 minutes are free on every ride!

We’ve also made a major effort to improve transparency. The City Manager provides regular updates on City projects and programs via his “Friday Update,” which is posted on the City’s website and shared via social media. City staff provide daily updates on City services, classes, events and projects on Facebook (www.facebook.com/cityofhealdsburg) and Nextdoor (https://nextdoor.com/agency-detail/ca/healdsburg/city-of-healdsburg/). The City also has a new Instagram account (www.instagram.com/cityofhealdsburg) to showcase events, employees and programs. I’m more of a Facebook guy, but my wife enjoys Instagram and my mother-in-law likes Nextdoor, so our family is covered when it comes to updates on activities in Healdsburg.

Finally, our Council, Planning Commission and other commission meetings are now streamed live online so you can watch them on your computer, tablet or smartphone anytime. A number of residents have commented how much they appreciate seeing the staff reports, graphics, public comment and live meetings.

As you can see, Healdsburg is a leader and has accomplished a lot, but we can do even better. This year, we will build on the foundation set by previous city councils and establish our five-year strategic plan and plant the seeds for an update to our general plan. This process will include extensive public input, staff and expert reports as well as the recently completed Healdsburg SDAT report. We’ll also be working on creating an affordable housing master plan, providing river access from Badger Park and completing the Foss Creek pathway north to Grove Street. Remember, all of us on Council are your neighbors. We were elected to serve you, not just those who voted for us. Reach out to us; we are listening. While we may not agree on every issue, we’re still neighbors and we all love Healdsburg.  I look forward to seeing you at a council meeting or around town.

Thank you,

David Hagele, Mayor, City of Healdsburg
