Guerneville Groove by Marina McTaggart - October 2019

Groovy Gators are already approaching the end of the 1st quarter at Guerneville School! Can you believe it? Time really is flying by! Remember, they are always looking for volunteers to help with the library, garden, music, Classroom Readers, demo cooking lessons, etc. Call the school office for more information at 707-869-2864. If you have time to give, please consider giving to our youth. October brings with it the celebrations of Fall and Halloween, so be sure to be extra watchful for the little ones in costumes after dark and don’t forget Safe Trick-or-Treating with the downtown businesses on the 31st!

Wednesday, Oct 2nd is the Russian River Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors Elections at this month’s mixer. It will be held at Northwood Restaurant and will begin at 6 pm. Come on out to mingle with your local business owners and interact with the newly elected Board!

Do you like comic books? On Friday the 4th and Saturday the 5th, the Guerneville Regional Library will be having a comic book sale and will have over 6,000 comic books on hand! The Friends of the Library will be selling these treasures for 50 cents each or 3 for $1.

Saturday the 5th seems to be a very popular day for local events; so much is happening! Be sure to check out the annual Guerneville Cemetery Tour, to learn the fascinating history of Guerneville’s Pioneer Days from our very own John Schubert. The $5 suggested donation will benefit the Russian River Historical Society. Our local cemetery has some of the most beautiful statues and unique stories; this is a must-attend!

Also on the 5th, is the installation of the Reverend Amie Giordano, who was recently called to be the Pastor of Metropolitan Community Church of the Redwood Empire in Guerneville. Rev. Giordano is a graduate of Pacific School of Religion & Yale University and has a twin sister who is a Buddhist monk. Reverend Giordano’s installation will be held on Saturday at 3 pm at the Odd Fellows Hall on First St. All are welcome to attend and there will be an Italian dinner served afterward.

After dinner, head over to Monte Rio to the Russian River Hall at 8 pm, for the Flying Leap Improv Theatre Ensemble performance! Expect a night of comedy and song from our local performers. Be sure to purchase your $15 tickets before this is sold out, by emailing SusanPacker@gmail.com . I can guarantee you will laugh the night away!

Another groovy event coming up quickly is the annual Monte Rio Casino Night at the Monte Rio Community Center! This fundraiser for the Monte Rio Chamber is packed with food, refreshing drinks, cocktails, entertainment, raffle prizes, silent auctions and of course, Gaming! Attendees will be entered in a drawing for a wheel barrel full of wine and there will also be a “most elegantly dressed” contest. I have attended this event over the past several years and can tell you it’s a LOT of fun! Get your $75 tickets at www.eventbrite.com. This action-packed event will be held on Saturday November 2nd from 6 – 10 pm.

In closing I would like to acknowledge the groovy Keary and Sally Sorensen, our local business owners/operators of Everclean North. Not only do they run their daily business of cleaning and restoration at it’s peak, they volunteer endless hours, time and dump run fees to keep our town clean of trash, dog / human waste, power washing the plaza, bridge, sidewalks, emptying the town trash receptacles and do not get paid one cent to do it! Please, please, please, give a donation of any amount to them as the fees are beginning to become a burden, not to mention the time spent, equipment usage and necessary supplies they purchase out of pocket! We are working on putting out monetary donation “buckets” at a few of the downtown businesses and would appreciate anything you can spare. And most of all, be sure to reach out and thank them for the next time you see these two colorful, groovy Angels, cleaning up groovy Guerneville!
