Guerneville Groove by Beth Udometkin — July 2019

July kicks off in high gear with Independence Day festivities throughout the area! At press time, there were no “official” plans for the 4th in downtown Guerneville, but I know our groovy Rodger from the R3 was in the planning stages, so hopefully by now, you are all aware of what’s happening.

As for Monte Rio, Friday July 5th will be the only day for the Big Rocky Games at the Monte Rio Beach….this is a LOT of fun for the whole family, so be sure to take the kiddos to the festivities that begin at noon! Afterwards, will be the Water Curtain and Fireworks!

Also on Friday the 5th will be the 1st Friday Artwalk throughout downtown Guerneville. Check out all of the street artists and the wonderful galleries we so fortunate to have!

Saturday, July 6th is the Russian River Sisters’ Ice Cream Social which will be held at Sonoma Nesting from 2-4pm. This is to support the Sisters’ Schoolhouse, so bring a donation of school supplies for an extra free raffle ticket! $5 will get you a Scoop of Sonoma Ice Cream along with 2 cookies & fudge sauce. Thank you, Scoop of Sonoma for donating the ice cream!

Once you have cooled off and are ready for a delicious meal, head back over to the Monte Rio Fire Dept for their annual fundraiser BBQ! They have hats for the kids and your little adventurists can even climb up on a fire truck; be sure to purchase a t-shirt or sweatshirt to support your local fire dept.

The Russian River Chamber of Commerce will be holding its Mixer on Wednesday the 10th over in Forestville at Russian River Vineyards. Be sure to check out the historical buildings onsite while enjoying the view of their beautiful gardens and outdoor dining area!

On Thursday the 11th, be sure to grab your dancing shoes as Rockin’ the River will be shakin’ it up with La Marcha, a nonstop Cumia, Salsa and Bachata Dance Party! The entertainment begins at 7pm and we thank our Russian River Rotary Foundation for such an enjoyable evening. Remember, these events are FREE to the public, so be sure to bring a few bucks to purchase a raffle ticket from your local Rotarian at the concert. Thanks to all of the sponsors of these fabulous concerts throughout the summer as well!

Congratulations to the Farmhand for re-opening after being wiped out by the flood; they had their ribbon cutting ceremony in June and we are so glad to have them back!

On the opposite side of town, Helena at Baked on the River has expanded her hours into the evenings, serving delicious dinners in addition to her wonderful baked goods.

AND, rumor has it, that there is a Cider House going into the former seafood restaurant, next door to the Rainbow soon….again, just a rumor, so we shall see!! And speaking of the Rainbow Cattle Company, for those newbies in town or visitors as well, did you know that every Tuesday, you can eat dinner for a suggested $5 donation at the Rainbow? Every week, at 6pm, a different organization hosts a dinner buffet and the Rainbow splits the evenings bar tab with that non-profit organization! This month’s groovy recipients and home chefs will be the River Choir, Russian River Historical Society, Pets are Loving Support, Curtain Call Theatre, Dogma Animal Rescue.

Speaking of the Russian River Historical Society, their annual car show is in August, but if you want to sponsor a car or trophy, be sure to reach out to Jane Barry at jbarry@russianriverhistory.org. I’ll share more about the event in our next issue. Don’t forget Sisters Bingo on July 13th, celebrating Hero’s and Villians. Buy your tickets in advance online as they sell out quickly.

We are seeing several communities putting together Neighborhood Watch groups and also, some neighborhoods are teaming up with CAL FIRE to come up with evacuation plans in the case of a horrible wildfire; something you need to start up conversations about with your neighbors!! Let’s all work together to keep our neighborhoods and each other safe!

Any El Molino Lions out there from the class of 1979? We are having our 40 year reunion on August 3rd at Northwood Restaurant! Contact me at Pinnacle Capital Mortgage in downtown Guerneville and I’ll connect you with Garth Getchell and Marilyn Kelso for reservations/tickets. It’s going to be groovy! Enjoy your summer everyone!!
