Guerneville and the lower Russian River

Fall is here! My favorite time of year. I love all the beautiful colors it brings.

To me, it’s the beginning of the holiday season. The decorations have already started coming out. This year will be a welcomed change from the last two Halloweens. Although we are not entirely done with COVID, we know a lot more about it, so we are not afraid to get together and celebrate the upcoming holidays and events, but cautiously. Happy Halloween, and be safe!

So let’s see what’s “Rollin’ on the River” this month

BINGO is back! Saturday, October 8, at the Santa Rosa Veterans building, the Sisters will be holding their first Bingo night. I only attended one, and I have to say it was so much fun. If you’ve never gone, you need to. It’s not only playing Bingo, but they pull the audience into the fun they are having, plus you’re donating to a good cause.

Russian River Senior Center

(15010 Armstrong Woods Road) - here’s what’s going on in October:

Lunch is served four days:

Tuesdays: Meals by guest chefs, $5.00 per plate; Wednesdays: meals by restaurant chefs (the wonderful Saucy Mama will delight us on Oct 12 & 16) $12.00 per plate; Thursdays: Brown bag lunches, $5.00 donation or pay what you can; Fridays: Lunch by Chef Orelia, $5.00 per plate.

Give Back Tuesday on October 25 at Rainbow Cattle Company will benefit the Senior Center. If you have fabulous items you would like to donate for raffle prizes, please call Vicki at 707-823-1640 x 404, or bring them to the Senior Center on a Wednesday or Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

The Senior Center is hosting a Medicare, Annual Choices and Changes seminar presented by HICAP Wednesday, October 26, 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. Call 800-434-0222 or go to the Senior Center to sign up.

Save the date Tuesday, November 2, 11:30 to 1:00 p.m., for a Day of the Dead luncheon and ceremony to honor those they have lost.

Free rides for Seniors and individuals with disabilities for medical appointments and grocery shopping. Please call seven days in advance. 707-889-7367. Must be fully vaxxed; masks still required.

Help a senior once a week, once a month, or now and then – by taking them to doctor’s appointments or grocery shopping. Russian River Senior Center is working in partnership with the Sebastopol Area Senior Center to find more people to volunteer to drive to help seniors who live in the lower river area and no longer drive. To sign up, call Scotty at 707-827-8429 or email at Scotty@sebastopolseniorcenter.org. Mileage reimbursement may be available.

Library

In need of some new reading material, well, the River Friends of the Library is having a book sale Wednesday through Saturday, October 19 – 22

Wednesday from 10 to 7 and Thursday to Saturday from 10 to 5. The Halloween Open House at the Guerneville Regional Library is on October 31 from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Forum room.

This was an annual event before COVID. During COVID, they handed out goody bags to the kids on a drive-by basis. This time they can have it indoors again. All ages are welcome — goodies for the kids and activities like painting your small pumpkin. You can pick out a free book if you come in a costume. There will be door prizes you can enter to win. It sounds like a lot of fun so don’t miss it as I’m sure you will have a spook-tacular time.

History

Here are a couple more save the dates that you want to attend. The Russian River Historical Society is hosting these events. The first one is Saturday, October 22, 1:00-3:00. Katherine Rinehart, writer and historian, will share her experience processing the late John C Schubert collection at the Senior Center. Then if that isn’t interesting enough, on Saturday, October 29 at 1:00 p.m., join them at the Guerneville Pioneer Cemetery for a tour to learn about Guerneville’s Pioneer Days from the Undertaker and the Preacher. For more information, call (707) 953.6074.

So that’s what’s “Rollin on the River,” and I leave you with a quote,

“A kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal.” - Steve Maraboli
