As I write this, the skies have cleared and we are in our secret spring — everything is greening up, some wildflowers are making brave forays, and we are looking at a week of weather that may even reach into the 70s… albeit the lower numbers. In the fields the vine pruners are busy when the weather permits and another new cycle is about to begin. It’s easy to love Northern Sonoma County at this moment. While there is much to wonder about in the months ahead, including the changes that will come with the PG&E bankruptcy, it’s good moment to breathe in that clear air and look into the future.

While contemplating a horticultural catalog a few days ago, I was reminded of Luther Burbank's connections with Geyserville. He was acquainted with one of the early owners of the Isis Oasis Sanctuary property, John Bosch, and supposedly some of the trees and plants here came directly from Burbank. But Burbank also frequented the Heart's Desire Nursery on what is now the Trentadue Winery property. You can read about his history there at http://trentadue.com/about/the-trentadue-story-expanded/.  Perhaps, as a town, we should make more of our historic connection with the  renowned horticulturist who had such an impact on Sonoma County — and the world.

Lake Sonoma Steelhead Festival is Feb 9.Here in Geyserville, we have a number of events to look forward to. It’s the month of love after all, so, naturally, Geyserville celebrates with the Annual Steelhead Festival at the Milt Brandt Visitor Center at Lake Sonoma, Saturday, February 9, 2019 - 10am - 4pm and is Free Admission —  for your GPS, the address is3288 Skaggs Springs Road.  What does this have to do with love, you ask? If you are a steelhead trout, plenty.  The fish return in droves to their original stream, ready to spawn and create the next generation of our local iconic fish. This festival is a fun family day - but make sure to get there early or arrange to be dropped off and picked up, as parking will be quickly full to overflowing if past years are any indication. While the weather is good right now, it’s often drizzly for the Steelhead Festival, so less accordingly if there are clouds in the sky. The free admission event begins at 10am and runs till 4pm, with vendors, fishing for a small fee, and other fishy fun. For more information, Contact: Friends of Lake Sonoma at 707-431-4533  or by email at  info@lakesonoma.org.  While Lake Sonoma is the best spot for fish viewing, they can also be spotted in the Russian River at the fish ladder in Healdsburg, and in other streams around the area.

Some of the delicious offerings at Diavola Pizzeria and Salumi. Photo: www.diavolapizzeria.comThis year’s renowned Michelin Guide finally includes Geyserville — Dino Bugica’s Diavola Pizzeria and Salumi has been noted under the “Bib Gourmand” category, a special category recognizing outstanding but less pricy and more casual restaurants that are the best in their categories… that “less pricy and more casual” can also be read as simply “much more fun” restaurants! Along with Diavola’s “Slow Food” Golden Snail recognition, and various other awards, they’re about to run out of window-posting space.

Along with  Catelli’s,  Coppola’s Rustic, and the Geyserville Grille, it makes me feel so fortunate to have such good food in Geyserville, much of it just steps away from Isis Oasis Sanctuary. If you are looking for a place to dine for Valentine’s Day, be sure to get your reservations in early, especially for romantic favorite Catelli’s which fills up fast.
