Film and Theater Previews by Don Gibble - November 2017

First of all, I want to say thank you to everyone who volunteered during this hectic time. My family has evacuated early Monday morning and my cousin,

The Mill Valley Film Festival was going at the same time and for some of us in Sonoma County that were able to go it was an amazing festival. Movies to see are “Molly’s Game” starring Jessica Chastain and“Ladybird” directed by actress Greta Gerwig. Another amazing movie was “Mudbound” starring Mary J Blige and directed by the very talented Dee Rees. All these movies are coming out next month and December.

The Napa Valley Film Festival will run November 8th through the 12th. Luckily the Powers That Be did not cancel the festival because of the recent fires. Two movies to see are“Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool” starring Annette Bening and Jamie Bell and“Molly’s Game” starring Jessica Chastain. It was a recent hit at the Mill Valley Film Festival. On November 10th Will Ferrell will receive the Maverick Tribute. If you are a Will Ferrell fan this is your chance to meet him in person.

Movies to see in local theaters this month are“Coco”, the first Pixar Hispanic film. This is an epic world-hopping fantasy set around the Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos. It opens November 22nd. Perfect film to see over the Thanksgiving weekend. “Mudbound” starring Mary J Blige opens November 17th. This was a big hit at the Mill Valley Film Festival. Look for Oscar nominations for the actors and director.“Thor: Ragnarok” opens November 3rd. Perfect for the whole family. The competition to “Thor” is “Justice League” which opens November 17th. Fans of this summer’s “Wonder Woman” will definitely want to see this because her story is the focus for this installment in the DC franchise. Fans of Julia Roberts will be happy she is back in the tearjerker“Wonder” which opensNovember 17th. Owen Wilson also stars. If you can’t go to the Napa Valley Film Festival you can catch “Molly’s Game” in theaters November 22nd. Will Jessica Chastain finally win her Oscar? Hope so!

For my live theater fans, you can catch our publisher Vesta Copestakes in the annual “Dancing With the Stars” Bubbles & Bling 2017 November 4th at the Raven Theater in Healdsburg. Our Publisher - VESTA - is one of the STAR Dancers!. Reserved tickets are $35 and general tickets are $20. The BENEFIT performance was originally intended to support the theater - keep live theater alive - but now proceeds will be going to local fire relief funds. many ways to help people!

Main Stage West in Sebastopol is opening“Daddy Long Legs” November 17th and closes December 10th. Based on the classic novel which inspired the 1955 movie starring Fred Astaire. Call 707 823 0177 for more information. ACT in San Francisco continues the hit “Small Mouth Sounds” which closes December 10th. “Small Mouth Sounds” won over audiences and critics alike off-Broadway. It’s definitely worth the drive to San Francisco. 415-439-2424
