Film and Theater by Don Gibble - May 2019

May is all about Mother's Day so plan on taking your mom or daughter to brunch and then a movie after. Six movies come out in May, all with a female lead! First is “Long Shot” starring Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen. It comes out May 3rd. Fred (Rogen) is a gifted journalist with an affinity for trouble. Charlotte (Theron) is one of the most influential women in the world. They have nothing in common...

Also coming out May 3rd is “The Intruder” starring Meaghan Good, Michael Ealy and Dennis Quaid. When a young married couple (Good and Ealy) buy their dream home in Napa Valley, they think they have found the perfect home...

Opening May 10th is “Wine Country” starring Amy Poehler, Rachel Dratch and Maya Rudoplh. In honor of Rebecca's (Dratch) 50th birthday, Abby (Poehler) plans a Napa getaway with their best friends...

Also opening May 10th is “The Hustle” starring Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson. They play female scam artists very similar to the male scam artists in the very funny “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels released in 1988.

Also opening May 10th is “Poms” starring Diane Keaton and Rhea Perlman. This movie follows a group of women who form a cheerleading squad at their retirement community.

Finally we have the best movie of the year. It was a hit at last month's San Francisco Film Festival. On May 24th "Booksmart" comes out. If you only see one movie this month, this has to be it! It stars Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein as best friends about to graduate from high school. Actress Olivia Wide makes her directorial debut and knocks it out of the ballpark. Cuba Gooding Jr's son Mason also stars in his first leading role. You will laugh and cry. Perfect for a mother and daughter date.

For my live theater fans it's a busy month at the LBC in Santa Rosa. First is Willie Nelson May 7th at 8pm. This might be his last tour, so you better get tickets. “Chicago” fans will want to take their kids to “Chicago the Musical – High School Edition” playing May 17th through the 19th. And Derek Hough fans will want to see his first ever solo tour May 28th. Call 707 546 3600 for tickets to any of these events at the LBC.

Paul McCartney fans will want to see “Stroll Down Penny Lane” at the Downtown Theatre in Fairfield. It was recently in Napa where friends said even the most die-hard Beatles fans attending the show discovered something they had not known. The lead singer sounded just like Paul McCartney. The screen behind the band provided interesting visual patterns and images and the music that was playing was timed perfectly to the video on the screen. Not to be missed. Only May 11th. Call 707 940 0700 for tickets. Email me at dongibblecast@hotmail for any film and theater questions. Have an amazing Mother's Day!
