Film and Theater by Don Gibble - June 2018

My favorite time of the year has arrived. The first film I’m excited about is the sequel to “The Incredibles”. It opens June 15th. It’s been 14 years since the original came out but you will remember all the characters, especially Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl. This of course is appropriate for the whole family.

I’m also excited about “Ocean’s 8”. It opens June 8th. Stars include Oscar winners Sandra Bullock, Anne Hathaway and Cate Blanchett. This is an expansion of Steven Soderbergh’s George Clooney-starring franchise. Opening June 1st is the San Francisco Film Festival hit, “A Kid Like Jake”. Starring Claire Danes and Jim Parsons. They play a married couple with a gender-nonconforming child. Timely subject!

For those of you who love mysteries will be happy to see “Under the Silver Lake” starring Andrew Garfield. It opens June 22nd. It’s about Garfield’s character, who goes on a date with his neighbor and then, the next day, she’s vanished. Opening June 15th is the hilarious “Tag” starring Jon Hamm and Ed Helms. Imagine continuing to play the childhood game tag into your adulthood. That’s the premise of this comedy. I saw a preview yesterday and it was hilarious!

The biggest release in June is “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” starring the very busy Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. It opens June 22nd.

The Mendocino Film Festival opens this weekend. Friday they are having a retrospective screening of “My Family (Mi Familia)” at 11am. Director Gregory Nava will be on hand for Q&A after the screening along with two of the film’s stars, Jimmy Smits and Esai Morales. IF you’ve never been to Mendocino this is a perfect excuse. Gilda Radner fans will want to see the new documentary, “Love Gilda” at 8pm also this Friday. Call 707 937- 0171 for more information.

For my live theater fans it’s very busy in June in the bay area. First at Spreckels in Rohnert Park is “The Mermaid”. Only two performances. June 18th and June 19th. It’s the ballet version of “The Little Mermaid”. Appropriate for the whole family. Call 707-937 0171 for more information.

At A.C.T. in San Francisco is the world premiere of “Man in the Moon”, based on the hit film starring Reese Witherspoon. In the summer of ‘69, America is on the brink of change. In the cities, crowds are protesting the Vietnam War in the skies, Apollo 11 is speeding towards the first moon landing and at a Catskills resort near Woodstock, NY. Jewish housewife Pearl Kantrowitz is busy balancing her rebellious teenage daughter and her overworked husband. Call 415 749 2228 for more information.

At the Green Music Center on June 27th is the very popular “Mormom Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square”. Call 866-955-6040 for more information. If you’ve ever wanted to meet Bill Clinton in person here’s your chance! He’s appearing with novelist James Patterson June 28th at 8pm at the SAP Center in San Jose. Call 408 287 7070 for more information.

Enjoy the summer!
