Film and Theater by Don Gibble - July 2019

This year, the 4th of July falls on a Thursday so you can catch up on movies you missed in June on Saturday and Sunday.

The Reading movie theater in Rohnert Park has movies for the whole family costing only $1.00. That’s right! July 5 and 6is“Ice Age: Collission Course”. July 12 and 13 is“Sing”. July 19 and 20 is“Kung Fu Panda 3”. And July 26 and 27 is“Lego Batman Movie”. Call 707 586 5996 for more information. Definitely enjoy the magic of the big screen instead of spending more mone at the Red Box!

Opening July 19 is the live action version of“The Lion King” which starsDonald Glover, Seth Rogen, Beyonce and James Earl Jones. Simba idolizes his father, King Mufasa, and takes to heart his own royal destiny on the plains of Africa. But not everyone in the kingdom celebrates the new cub’s arrival. Scar, Mufasa’s brother has plans of his own. I’m very excited to see this!

Opening July 26th is “Once Upon A Time in Hollywood” starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt. This is Quentin Tarantino’s ninth film. Actor Rich Dalton gained fame and fortune by starring in a 1950’s television Western, but is now struggling to find meaningful work in a Hollywood that he doesn’t recognize anymore. He spends most of his time drinking and palling around with Cliff Booth, his best friend and longtime stunt double. This movie has to be seen in the theater!

For my live performance fans we have a lot to be thankful for in July. If you’re a fan ofJoan Jett andCheap Trick you have to go to theMarin County Fairthis weekend. Joan performs July 6 and Cheap Trick performs July 7. Call 415 473 6400 for more information.

At the Green Center in Rohnert Park the Transcendence Theatre Company andSanta Rosa Symphony perform on4th of July. They were amazing last year and will be amazing this year. Call 707 664 4246.

If you haven’t seen “West Side Story” yet you’re in luck: it gotextended to July 7th. I was very impressed with Jonah Robinson who playsTony and was flown from New York to play the role. Good job 6th Street! Call 707 523 4185 for tickets before they sell out.

One of my favorite plays from the 80’s is “Crimes of the Heart” which was turned into a movie in 1986 starringDiane Keaton, Jessica Lange andSissy Spacek. You have a chance to see it live at theRoss Valley Players in Ross July 12 through August 11. Call 415 456 9555 for tickets.

Fans of Rick Sprngfield and Richard Marx will be happy to see them together live July 14 atRodney Strong Vineyards.
