Emily Blunt in Mary Poppins Returns. BY Melissa Hillier - License https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/For those of you who haven't experienced the magic that is “Mary Poppins Returns” you still have a chance to see this breathtaking movie in a theater. The Golden Globes nominations came out and both Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda were nominated for their roles in “Mary Poppins Returns”. The film itself is nominated for Best Picture, Musical or Comedy.

Their biggest competition is“Green Book” which also is still in theaters. Both Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali were nominated for their roles in “Green Book”.

Spike Lee At Cannes for BlacKkKlansman“A Star is Born” was nominated for Best Picture, Drama. Their biggest competition is “Black Klansman”.  Bradley Cooper was nominated for Best Actor and Best Director. Lady Gaga was nominated for Best Actress. My friend from high school, Sam Rockwell was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in “Vice”. Christian Bale was nominated for Best Actor in “Vice”. It just came out last week, so you have plenty of time to see this gem. The Golden Globes will be televised this Sunday, January 6 on NBC. Enjoy!

Movies released this month include  “Escape Room”. It follows six strangers who find themselves in circumstances beyond their control. It opens January 4th. 

“The Upside” opens January 11th. This is a very funny movie I saw at the Napa Film Festival in 2017. It stars Kevin Hart and Nicole Kidman. It's definitely worth your time. 

Also opening January 11th is  “A Dog's Way Home” starring Ashley Judd and Edward James Olmos. A dog embarks on an epic 400 mile journey home after she is separated from her human, Lucas.  

Opening January 18th is  “Glass”.  Bruce Willis returns as David Dunn as does Samuel L Jackson as Elijah Price, known also by his pseudonym Mr. Glass. Joining from “Split” are James McAvoy, reprising his role as Kevin Wendell Crumb and the multiple identities who reside within. 

Opening January 25th is  “Serenity”  starring Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway. From Oscar nominee Steven Knight comes a sexy, stylized thriller.

The best film festival opens January 24th. It's the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. Highlights this year include:

“Clemency” starring Alfred Woodard as a prison warden. As she prepares to execute another inmate, she must confront the psychological and emotional demons her job creates. 

The controversial Play Swallow is a must see.Viola Davis returns to Sundance with  “Troupe Zero” . Also starring fellow Oscar winner, Allison Janney. In rural 1977 Georgia, a misfit girl dreams of life in outer space. 

Jake Gyllenhaal returns with  “Velvet Buzzsaw” which also stars Rene Russo, his costar from the amazing “Nightcrawler”. 

Fans of “Crazy Rich Asians” will want to see Awkwafina in her first leading role in “The Farewell”

Fans of Shia La Beouf will definitely want to see  “Honey Boy”.  A movie based on his life which he wrote. He plays his father and Lucas Hedges plays Shia. It will be an amazing year at Sundance!
