Film and Theater by Don Gibble - January 2018

Award season begins this weekend with the

Movies coming out in January include “Insidious: The Lost Key” starring Lin Shaye. It opened Dec. 29th. Opening January 12th include “The Commuter” starringLiam Neeson andVera Farmiga. It’s not January without a Liam Neeson movie! Also opening January 12th is “Proud Mary” starring Taraji P Henson and one of my favorite actors Danny Glover. “The Post” starringMeryl Streep and Tom Hanks finally opens in Sonoma County January 12th. “Paddington 2” also opens January 12th for the kids in your life. Chris Hemsworth fans will be happy he has a new movie opening January 19th. It’s called “12 Strong” and also stars Michael Shannon. Also opening January 19th is “Den of Thieves” starring Gerard Butler. Hopefully it’s better than his last movie, “Geostorm” which is one of the worst movies of 2017.

“Maze Runner: The Death Cure” opens January 26th. Fans of the series will be happy the new installment has arrived.James Franco fans will be happy that he has a new movie opening January 26th. It’s called “Arctic Justice Thunder Squad”. It also stars Jeremy Renner.

If you haven’t had a chance to see “Lady Bird” or “the Shape of Water” you still can at the Summerfield. Many people have seen the new“Star Wars”. Insead of seeing it a second time try seeing another movie for a first time. One movie to stay away from is “All the Money in the World”. Director Ridley Scott thought he was doing us a service by erasing Kevin Spacey from his movie but instead made a mess out of his movie. Every scene Christopher Plummer is in, the viewer can tell the scene was redone.Michelle Williams delivers an amazing performance but when she’s on screen with Plummer the vibe changes. This will cost her an Oscar nomination which is very sad.

For my live theater fans you still have a chance to see “My Way: A Musical Tribute to Frank Sinatra” at theCinnabar Theater in Petaluma. It closes January 14th. It shows on Friday and Saturday at 8pm. And Sunday at 2pm. Call 707 763 8920 for tickets. For those of you willing to drive to San Francisco you’re in for a treat! Tony Award winnerJudith Ivey stars in Harold Pinter’s “The Birthday Party” directed by Carey Perloff showing at the A.C.T. theater 415 Geary Street San Francisco. Call 415 749-2228 for tickets.

Hope you all had an amazing Christmas with your family and wishing you a fun and happy new year!
