Cazadero Communications by Natasha Pehrson — February — 2020

I have been viewing the large redwoods shrouded in fog outside of my cozy cyber-hut and hearing a loud, persistent 'hoot, hoot' from an owl or two! Nice to see Austin Creek flowing with our much-needed water. The recent rains have been great-as long as we don't receive 4 or five heavy days in a row, the earth will absorb the rain and will be less apt to flood!

Interesting thoughts-as the 2020 Census is beginning, I wonder how many folks actually live here? I have read a variety of numbers, but they all seem too low. Anyone know the answer? Please call me at 632 5545 or email mayawrld@sonic.net as I am very curious re this statistic.

March will herald the monthly meetings of the Cazadero Community Club-usually held on 1st Tuesday, 7 p.m. at Firehall #1. Due to the Primary election on the 4th, I believe that the meeting will be on March 11th. Please attend and help your neighbors plan events which benefit the entire community.

Regarding the Primary, please do vote! I will never tell you who or what to support, but it is imperative that you participate. Local issues and positions are especially crucial as there are few registered voters in many of our districts.

Montgomery Elementary students will focus a portion of their studies on Abraham Lincoln, learning about his life and his presidency. Students also get an opportunity to learn about many other presidents who have greatly served our country. This coincides with observing the holidays of Lincoln's Birthday and President's Day. Montgomery students hit a big milestone in their school year and get to celebrate the 100th day of school. This is always a day that students look forward to, and each class has their own way of celebrating. Students will also get to celebrate Valentine's Day and have an opportunity to show their appreciation of their classmates.

Yes, Valentine's day is coming up and I do I hope that you all have a sweetie to shower with love and vice versa. Have a festive meal at a local restaurant, such as River's End in Jenner, Cape Fear in Duncans Mills a nd Rio Bistro at Lucy's in Monte Rio. Check out the wonderful teas and related items at the Duncans Mills Tea Shop. Of course, Treats and Toys next to the DM Post Office has yummy truffles and other candies for gifting and yourself! Gold Coast Coffee and Bakery, Raymond's Bakery Friday Night Music and Pizza are also great spots to relax and enjoy friends, music and food. If you need to catch up on household, vehicle or garden projects, remember Cazadero Supply's 1st Saturday 15% Discount Day for many useful items. Like to cook? The Cazadero and Duncans Mills General Stores carries locally raised meats, smoked salmon and wines for your next meal.

Easter (April 12th) and Passover (begins April 19th) will soon be here and there are always festive local events. The Russian River Jewish Community will hold its annual Passover Seder at the Monte Rio Community Center on Friday, April 10. Features Jubilee Klezmer Ensemble, group reading of the Haggadah , homemade matzoh ball soup and other traditional foods. Please call 632 5545 for reservations(suggested) and information.

The days are getting longer and soon irises and other Spring indicators will appear. Take a few hours to go to one of our wonderful beaches and watch the waves and with luck, the whales.

I wish a Very happy February birthday to Luna Bordero on the 2nd, Ruori Lough on the 3rd and Matthew Harra celebrates on the 4th. Serena Hawthorne and Hannah Lockhart Murley enjoy the 9th, Natalie Canelis on the 19th, Jesus Velasquez-Greer on the 22nd and Kiona Scherrer on the 25th.

Have a wonderful Valentine's day, drive carefully and call me at 632 5545 or email mayawrld@sonic.net with info for your Cazadero column!
