Mark Shimizu Jewelry Design of Windsor

By Ron Skaar

Jewelry seems to have always carried elements of supernatural or mystical meaning. Silver was sacred to the moon, as gold was to the sun. When jewelry began to be used selecting it became an art form.

Mark Shimizu and other local artists create their art with unique sterling, gold, platinum and copper jewelry pieces delightfully displayed at his showroom in Windsor. His wife, Laurie, searches for the newest and most remarkable custom and fashion jewelry available.

Ruby pendant with yellow and white diamondsTheir showroom on the corner of Windsor Road and McClelland Drive is beautifully appointed. The warm cork flooring and central cherry showcases are exquisitely lit from above. Colorful Sally Baker watercolors highlight the inner walls. The large windows along the Drive illuminate the tall adjacent showcases.

Mark, Laurie and their sales person Erin honed their trade over a couple decades, at the former Earthworks in Coddingtown. They moved into this space over a year ago from a smaller space down the road which was their showroom for ten years. These Windsor residents are charmed to be apart of the community.

Near the entrance and beyond the fruit wood jewelry boxes are the Eco drive Citizen Watches, which are rechargeable in any socket. Next to that is a case with unusual lapis lazuli, malachite and delicate Roman glass pieces. The next case has an array of opal and jade jewelry with unimaginable colors and amazing strings of South Sea fresh-water pearls.

Estate and unique consignment jewelry fill an adjacent case. Every piece has a story. An incredible gold spider, which Mark created from a dead insect through the lost wax process leads to his display of custom jewelry creations.

The selection of engagement and wedding rings includes the popular halo style and a new textured extruded metal variety. He delights couples with his custom made rings.

Artisan pieces from Marin, Petaluma and Santa Rosa are displayed in the tall cases by the window. Natural gems in copper and brass settings in one, and long silver neck chains occupy another. An Ed Levin silver necklace with blue topaz and a mechanically hinge, which allows it to lay perfectly on any body type, graces his collection.
