OPINION: “When We Stick Together, We Have a Powerful Voice”

OPINION: “When We Stick Together,  We Have a Powerful Voice”

Across the nation our drinking water has been jeopardized, areas like Flint, Michigan and the California Central Valley have found their water is contaminated and in some cases considered toxic, poisoning entire communities. From lead contamination to oil contamination created by pipelines punctures and spills, it is time to look at the facts. Noting our already stressed water systems, continuing to install pipelines across our nation only increasing the threat to our rights to clean drinking water nationwide.

Inspired to act in solidarity with #NoDAPL (No Dakota Access Pipeline) and #WaterIsLife (Protecting our natural water sources), community members sponsored by The Peace and Justice Center of Sonoma County and the Sebastopol Grange #306 are coming together on Nov. 6th from 5-10pm at the Sebastopol Grange (6000 Sebastopol Rd (Hwy 12)) to raise money, supplies and awareness about the illegal oil pipeline project in North Dakota and the need to protect our own drinking water from contamination. $20 donation.

This will be a family friendly event with games and art to engage the youth as well as educating the public. This event will include several informative speakers, musical acts, indigenous dancing, live art, a silent auction, vending booths, food and drink for sale and a donation area to drop off blankets and other winter supplies to be sent to the Standing Rock Tribe.

Profits and donations collected will be sent to the Standing Rock Tribe in North Dakota to help them purchase supplies needed as they stand to protect their sacred lands and a small portion will be given to support local indigenous rights groups seeking to protect the waterways and our local environment.

It truly does take a village.  If you are interested in participating as a vendor, dancer or a volunteer contact the main organizers Dr. Loi C. Medvin (707-695-7888) & Brian Scharf (510-507-6609) for more information. Check out our Facebook and more updates will be provided @WaterIsLife101 Facebook page.
