North Coast Winds - Robin Joy Wellman - November 2016

Being thankful all the time is near impossible. Having gratitude when we have daily struggles can be shaken. So much can get thrown at us from all parts of our very full lives. If you listen to the music through the ages, or notice the writings from the most notable poets, or philosophers discussing the idea of happiness, or if you read the little sayings that pass through our Facebook page we know the focus throughout the year of finding peace and acceptance is the life message. I am sure it is different for everyone but for me taking a walk, getting out of town for an overnight, going to the ‘city’ for a day, tuning out via a movie, or a good book, or just venting with a good friend or family member is helpful. Faith, hope, love in our hearts, kindness, and support for those around us are all super important to each of us.  I have to say that coming back to being grateful for even the littlest thing such as a good cup of coffee is my reminder of loving the moment. Being thankful is certainly a focus as we look at one of our national holidays and I wish you all peaceful moments in the little things.

If you would like to get out and about, the Gualala Art Center will be hosting two art show openings, two musical performances with one of them, the “Festival of the Trees” event on Nov 25th, being a free to all. On Nov 19 running through to Dec 30 will be the exhibit and sell of works by local artists. This is such a great opportunity to shop local for unique gifts for our holiday giving. Please visit their website for more info at

At the Point Arena Lighthouse they will offer the “Beaver Full Moon Tour”. The tour offers a ‘panoramic view of the sea and coast front the lantern room at the top of the Tower…’ History of the lighthouse is shared as well as natural history stories with champagne, sparkling juice, and snacks and more offerings. Reservations must be made in advance by phone at 707-882-2809.

Who would have known that we also celebrate these crazy holidays: Deviled Egg Day on November 2, Sandwich Day on the 3rd, Marooned Without a Compass Day (what?) on the 6th, World Kindness Day (nice) on the 13th, World Peace Day on the 17th, World Hello Day on the 21st, French Toast Day the 28th (no kidding), and Square Dance Day on the 29th. Ooohhh – did I forget to mention the election? On purpose?

While we often focus on Thanksgiving in November, please remember Veterans Day on Nov 11th. Many people around you are service members who have served for different reasons in their lives which are often personal although they often will share stories. Please have conversation with our service members and show an interest in their story. You will be surprised. From my heart to yours, to all service members, thank you for your service to our country. Blessings to you all.
