Film and Theater Review by Don Gibble - September 2016

Film and Theater Review - September 2016

If you are a fan of Tom Hanks, Mark Wahlberg or Denzel Washington I have good news for you! They are all starring in movies opening this month. On September 9th, “Sully” opens starring Tom Hanks. On September 23rd,  the remake of “The Magnificent Seven” opens starring Denzel Washington, Ethan Hawke and Chris Pratt. On September 30th, “Deepwater Horizon” opens starring Mark Wahlberg, the amazing John Malkovich and Kurt Russell. This is based on true events that occurred on an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico on April 20th, 2010.

Other movies opening this month are “The Light Between Oceans” starring Oscar winner Rachel Weisz and Michael Fassbender. This opens September 2nd. On September 9th “When the Bough Breaks” starring Morris Chestnut and Regina Hall. They play a young, professional couple who desperately want a baby. They hire the perfect woman to be their surrogate. Or is she? On September 16th “Snowden” opens starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt portraying Edward Snowden. Also opening September 16th is the return of Bridget Jones in “Bridget Jones’s Baby” starring Renee Zellweger and Colin Firth. The animated “Storks” opens September 23rd with Kelsey Grammer and Andy Samberg lending their voices. On September 30th “Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children” opens starring Samuel L Jackson and directed by Tim Burton. If you haven’t had a chance to see Meryl Streep’s best career performance in “Florence Foster Jenkins” it’s still playing at Summerfield. I usually don’t like remakes but I really enjoyed the remake of “Pete’s Dragon” starring Robert Redford and the remake of “Ben-Hur”. Most film critics tore both films apart last month but they are both enjoyable and still playing in theaters.

If you’d rather see live theater there are many choices this month. 6th Street Playhouse opens “The House That Jack Built” on September 9th and closes September 25th. This is the world premiere and directed by the amazing Craig A Miler. Fans of Jack London should definitely plan on seeing this show. For tickets call 707-523-4185. Spreckels opens “Baskerville, A Sherlock Holmes Mystery” on September 16th and closes October 9th. This is directed by David Yen and five actors play more than 40 characters! For tickets call 707-588-3400. Raven Players opens “Sweeney Todd” on September 24th and closes October 9th. This is directed by Carl Hamilton and if you’ve never seen this on stage then do yourself a favor and call 707 433 6335 for a ticket.  If you are a Melissa Etheridge fan you will be happy to know that Weill Hall will have her September 3rd at 7 30pm. For tickets call 866-955-6040.

Primetime television returns in late September.
