By Don Gibble

August is finally here! The much anticipated movie “Suicide Squad” opens August 5th. Starring Will Smith, Ben Affleck and Jared Leto, this film is not a sequel or remake. Definitely see this in the theater. August 5th also opens “Nine Lives” starring Kevin Spacey and Jennifer Garner. August 12th opens the remake of the 1977 “Pete’s Dragon” and Meryl Streep’s “Florence Foster Jenkins”. If she gets nominated for an Oscar for this film this will be her 20th nomination! Wow! August 19th opens the remake of the 1959 classic “Ben Hur” starring Jack Huston, who starred on HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire”. Kirk Douglas was so amazing in the original it will be hard for this new version to become a classic so it’s worth watching to see. “War Dogs” also opens on the 19th. It stars Miles Teller and Jonah Hill. This movie looks very funny and it’s not a sequel or remake! On August 26th “The Intervention” opens. It was a hit at this year’s Sundance and Seattle film festivals. Clea Duvall and Jason Ritter give amazing performances. If you missed “Cafe Society” and “Captain Fantastic” laast month, they are still playing at the Summerfield.

On Friday, August 19th at 7pm you have the chance to see the best documentary at this year’s Sebastopol Documentary Film Festival. It’s called “Drawing the Tiger”. It was honored with a Jury Special Mention. The movie follows a Nepalese family through hardship and struggle toward a better life, finding hope and tragedy. It shows at the Sebastopol Center for the Arts. Tickets are $12.
