Occidental Oriented - July 2016 - MacKenzie Nekton

Occidental Oriented - July 2016 - MacKenzie Nekton

Hello neighbors,

MacKenzie’s off on an epic road trip, so I’m filling in with this month’s Occidental Oriented.

It’s officially summer time when the Old Road is littered with fallen wild plums, the hard green blackberries are just starting to turn a sour red, and signs for the Occidental Volunteer Fire Department’s Annual Bar-B-Que go up. If I’m not mistaken, this is the 61st year for this event. Besides the excellent tri-tip and chicken BBQ, there are oysters, desserts, games music, dancing, beer and wine and the chance to visit with friends and neighbors. Organizers tell me that desserts and volunteers are always needed. If you’re like me and you enjoy baking, but prefer to do it guilt and calorie free, get into the kitchen and bake up something wonderful. Pies and cakes are the best sellers-- they can be dropped off the day of at the event. Volunteers are always needed for a host of jobs from manning game booths to helping with the food line. If you’d like to help out please call the Fire House at 874-3800 and leave a message with your name and number.

Returning after a short trip, I found Hinterland Adventure Apparel has opened in the Neon Raspberry gallery space. Neon Raspberry is still there and has a new show “A Brief Inhabitance” of mixed media works by Madeleine Boga and will be on display through the summer. I’m looking forward to checking both out- I could use some adventure apparel!

A few doors down on Main Street, Boheme & Bodega Rancho tasting room has a new fresh look including an exhibit of stunning photography from local adventure photographer, Jerry Dodrill. Stop in for a tasting and you may just find yourself signing up for a one of Jerry’s Photo Workshops.

Speaking of signing up for things, Occidental will soon have its own Boot Camp! Plans are in the works for an all level boot camp taught by local trainer and longtime resident Lizzy Long. Contact her at or 326-6695 for more information and stayed turned here for a future update.

MacKenzie will be back next month!

Enjoy summer,

Fawn Nekton
