Chimera Arts and Makerspace Opens

Chimera Arts and Makerspace Opens

By Bryce Dow-Williamson

Chimera Arts and Makerspace is a growing community of creative people in Sonoma County interested in art, making, and creative pursuits of all shapes and sizes. We meet regularly to talk about our interests, work on projects, and share knowledge.

Chimera Arts and Makerspace recently grew into a 3,000 sq. ft. warehouse, with another 4,000 sq.ft. of outside space, at the old Ford Garage building at 6791 Sebastopol Ave., Sebastopol, CA.

Chimera is Sonoma County’s first 501(c)(3) non-profit community arts and makerspace (or hackerspace) and runs entirely through volunteers, monthly memberships, and class fees. For our first three years we met and worked together in a 700 sq.ft. portable office building, starting December of 2012. We have hosted over 250 events in last 3 years and currently have 75 active members.

We’re a thriving community of makers, artists, engineers, coworkers, families, and creatives of all types who love to share, learn, and work together. In the last three months since opening our new space we’ve gained 25 new members, hosted 20 free meetups and have hosted classes on jewelry making, metalworking, open source hardware, found art, coding, and making a beehive out of a log.

Apart from our various tools, free Meetups and classes on 3D printing, robotics, CNC, laser cutting, laser engraving, electronics and jewelry making, Chimera also provides coworking and meeting space for entrepreneurs looking for room to work or collaborate.

We’ll be hosting a variety of events over the next few months including classes on welding and metalworking, silversmithing, Flex Shaft rotary tool and the Dremel Engraver, which are used to draw lines and patterns in various metals, introduction to the Arduino Microcontroller, our annual robot fight, a Maker’s Market, and more.

Chimera Art and Makerspace is a place to unite and empower the Sonoma County creative community. A place where shared resources and workspace provide inspiration and opportunity for all. What have you always wanted to learn or build? Come down and become a part of our collaborative community of makers, we have the people, tools, skills, and learning resources you need!
