Firefighter News - July 2016

Left to Right: Firefighter/EMT Nate Buck, Gabriela Esquivias, Bishop Hennigh, Firefighter/EMT Lou Stoerzinger.Fire season in Sonoma County has begun! Please remember to maintain your defensible space around your homes. Defensible space is the area around your home that is properly maintained to slow the advancement of a wildfire. Please visit your local fire station or for more information.

Now that the temperatures are rising and the grasses are starting to dry out, it is becoming easier for wildland type fires to start. Remember to mow high weeds and grasses early and often. The lower temperatures and higher humidities help slow a fire should one start.

Remember to keep hydrated throughout the day on hot days. Dehydration can lead to heat stress or heat stroke and can be contributed to many medical emergencies during extreme heat. Avoid strenuous activities during the afternoons and drink plenty of fluids. While sodas and other beverages are tasty, water is generally the best at helping to stay hydrated.

Solar Power Impact

This is our two-year anniversary adding solar panels to the fire station. We reduced our PG&E bill over 80%! In addition, we already received our second rebate check for selling back electricity. The system should be paid off in roughly 8 years, which is amazing. Thanks to West Coast Solar for doing a great job!

As the temperatures begin to rise, spending a day on the river or at the coast becomes a great way to escape the heat. In either setting, the need to wear a life vest or other flotation device is strongly encouraged for all ages. Keep your family safe!

The next meeting of the Board of Directors will be on July 13th at 6pm at the fire station. We hope you’ll consider attending.

The Russian River Fire Protection District is accepting applications for Volunteers. Please inquire within for more information or visit our website a
