Film and Theater Review - July 2016

By Don Gibble

July is a huge month to go to the movies. This weekend, The Legend of Tarzan opens starring Alexander Skarsgard as Tarzan. I know what you’re thinking. There have been too many movies about Tarzan already. Well this one also stars Samuel L Jackson and the Oscar winning Christop Waltz and the amazing Djimon Hounsou so this one is worth checking out. Also opening this weekend is “BFG” released by Disney and directed by the iconic Steven Spielberg. The oscar winning actor Mark Rylance does the voice acting for the big friendly giant. Definitely worth seeing in the theater. Opening July 8th is “The Secret Life of Pets starring Kevin Hart and Louis C.K. lending their voices to this very funny movie. Also opening July 8th is Captain Fantastic starring Viggo Mortensen which can get him his first Oscar. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to standing ovations. It also was a success at the Seattle Film Festival in May. Opening July 15th is Ghostbusters starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig and Leslie Jones. It will be interesting how audiences receive an all woman cast. Also opening July 15th is “Cafe Society”, a hit at the Seattle Film Festival. This is Woody Allen’s 47th film and probably his best. It stars Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart in her best role. Opening July 22nd is Star Trek Beyond starring Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto. Anton Yelchin who recently died also stars. Opening July 29th is “Bad Moms” starring Mila Kunis and the adorable Christina Applegate and Kristen Bell, star of “Frozen”.
