Guerneville Groove - May 2016

by Beth Rudometkin

We are so blessed to live in such a beautiful area! And we are also blessed to have the xx “Garbage Patch Kids” group, also known as Clean River Alliance/Chris Brokate and his volunteers for keeping our community clean. Clean River Alliance, fiscally sponsored by Russian Riverkeeper, is having a Spaghetti Cook Off fundraiser on Saturday, May 14th. Calling all cooks out there, and I know quite a few of you, please sign up for this fun-filled event! The festivities begin at 4pm at Rio Nido Roadhouse and all proceeds go to Clean River Alliance. There will be games for kids, a bake sale, live music, a raffle and silent auction and of course dinner, which includes spaghetti, Caesar salad and garlic bread. If you would like to sign up to enter your award winning spaghetti dish, please go to www.cleanriveralliance.com for more information or contact Chris directly at 707-322-8304. Thank you Chris for all you do and Clean River Alliance, where talking trash is okay! Other ongoing events are the Monday clean ups (meet at the town square in Guerneville at 4pm) and the Coastal Beach Clean-up every first Saturday. Again, if you wish to volunteer for any of these events, please contact Chris.

Speaking of Russian Riverkeeper, don’t forget to sign up for the Great Russian River Race that will be held on May 21st! If you aren’t interested in kayaking, paddle boarding or canoeing down the river to Johnson’s Beach as a contestant in the race, be sure to attend the Free River Race Party which will be held at the finish line on Johnson’s Beach! There will be live music, food and drink, costumes, booths and lot of FUN! For more information visit greatrussianriverrace.com. Come out and support your Russian Riverkeeper!

There are a lot of benefits going on in May for so many groovy organizations! I am sure there will be another fundraiser for the Stumptown Daze Parade this month, which was scooped up and saved by a group of locals, after the Chamber of Commerce decided to cancel this event. I don’t have any details at the time of this writing, so keep your eyes and ears open for the latest updates or come and see me at Community First Credit Union. I was very disappointed that the Chamber cancelled another event we were all looking forward to, the Russian River Spring Fling. We received a notice via email a week before the event, announcing the cancellation, with no explanation. Just so you know, another event that has been cancelled by the Chamber this year is the annual Fireworks Show. I know plenty of you out there are probably dancing in the streets over this, but save your dance for the replacement event, where Main Street will be shut down for a Street Party and Laser Show. For more information, contact the Chamber office or attend the Russian River Chamber of Commerce Mixer on May 4th at 6pm which will be held at the Backyard in Forestville.

May 7th is the benefit for West County Community Services, which will be held at the Rio Theatre in Monte Rio. Join in the fun for the Derby Day Fundraising Gala 2016. There will be prizes awarded for “best hat in show”, races shown on the big screen, live music by The Honey Dippers, mint juleps, wine, beer and sweet tea. Get your tickets at eventbrite.com.

Have you noticed the activity going on over at the old Mercantile, right next door to groovy Trio? Not sure if they will be open in time for the summer season, but they are dividing the space up to rent out individual units. The transformation will be interesting to see! And over at the Bank Club (the old bank building on the corner of Church and Main St), I see postings for applications for selling alcoholic beverages by Sutro Wine Co. and Baldassari Family Wines!

Want to be a part of an unforgettable experience in volunteering? Ironman Vineman is looking for volunteers to ensure the success and safety of their events that will be held in July. You will witness first-hand groovy people doing groovy things, help the athletes reach their goal, get a groovy volunteer t-shirt, meet people from around the world, and be invited to a special Volunteer Dinner. (rumor has it ESPN will be in town filming, too!) Sign up at vineman@ironmanvolunteers.com!

Well, that’s all I have room for this month! If you have groovy community events you wish to share, please the information my way… I’m on the corner of Armstrong Woods Road and Main Street at Community First Credit Union.
