Guerneville Groove - June 2016 - Valerie Munthe

Guerneville Groove - June 2016

Happy Summer Days! We are heading back into hot weather, which means more out-of-towners are gracing our doorsteps. A century’s-long tradition, Guerneville has been at the heart of vacationers near and far. Our little town has a history of booming tourism dating as far back as the 1890s but it was 70 years ago that a group of merchants decided to create what would be the town’s most renowned event: Stumptown Daze. This past March, word traveled fast that the Chamber of Commerce voted to not hold the event this year; within 24 hours a group, aptly named the “Friends of Stumptown” was formed. After a couple fundraisers and securing a sponsor, the community has helped raise over $8000! So, let me say this loud and clear: STUMPTOWN IS ON! June 18th, 11am in Downtown Guerneville, come witness your favorites march down Main Street. After the parade, head over to Lark’s Parking Lot for the annual Firemen’s BBQ, Noon to 6pm. From now until the 18th, we are selling raffle tickets where you can win 7 (count them SEVEN) baskets FILLED with goodies from all over the Community. Raffle drawing will commense at the BBQ on the 18th. Tickets are $1 each and can be purchased from Trio’s Restaurant, The Appy Room, The Chamber Office and the Center for Sacred Studies. If you are interested in entering the parade, please contact ME or stop by the Chamber Office for a form. Deadline is June 13th. Cost is $30/entry, regardless of category.

Russian River Glory Days

The Russian River Historical Society is switching out exhibits at the Guerneville Bank Club. This year’s exhibit is Russian River Glory Days: A Tribute to Clare Harris. May 28th is the grand opening and the exhibit runs all year long. Stop by the Guerneville Bank Club, grab a scoop of ice cream and take a gander at the Big Band Poster collection. Also fresh off the presses a brand new Russian River Historical Society Wall Calendar. These calendars are adorned with beautiful historic images and historically relevant dates. Pick one of these up at the Guerneville Bank Club, Guerneville 5 & 10 or Mockingbird Books in Coffee Bazaar.

Rock your Vote! June 7th is the California Primary Election. If you have an absentee/mail-in ballot and haven’t mailed it by May 31, hang onto it and drop it off at your polling place. Guerneville’s polling places are the Guerneville Regional Library and the Vet’s Hall. Per the Secretary of State’s website: “If you registered with no party preference, you can vote in the Presidential primary for the following parties:
• Democratic
• American Independent
• Libertarian"
Voters who registered to vote without stating a political party preference are known as No Party Preference (NPP) voters.
...For presidential elections: NPP voters, unless they choose otherwise (see below), will receive a “non-partisan” ballot that does not include presidential candidates...How to request a party ballot? The NPP voter may ask their county elections office or poll worker, at their polling place, for a ballot for one of the above three parties." Look up your polling place here.  Look up your voting status here.
