Forestville - The Good Life - May 2016

Great Events Coming...

Spring is busy again with exciting activities, especially in the next few weeks. They all demonstrate the generosity, can-do attitude and power of volunteerism that permeate our community.

Pancake Breakfast, May 3

A benefit for the Forestville Fire Protection District, May 3, 8-12. Come for pancakes, eggs, sausage, coffee, orange juice and milk. $7 for adults, $5 for kids and seniors. There will be t-shirts and sweat shirts for sale, the Fire Safety Trailer, Free Book Mobile for the kids and a raffle with great prizes.

The BBQ is Here!

At last, after we waited all year, the Youth Park Barbeque is back again! First, the Parade begins at 10am Saturday, June 4, at the corner of First and Front streets in downtown Forestville. Prizes for each category: youth group, commercial, non-profit organization, musical group, and individuals. Watch out for the traditional ruckus between kids with water baloons and the fire truck! Entries need to be submitted by 5/28. Contact Leslie Zumwalt, frameofmind@sonic.net.

The Parade wends its way down Mirabel Road to the Youth Park where the BBQ & festivities are held 11-8 both Saturday and Sunday, June 4 and 5. Free admission.

This is a true celebration of the Forestville Community and what we can do when we join together for a good cause, our youth. Have a beer, soda, or glass of wine – enjoy the great live music – chat or dance with old and new friends – shop the handicraft booths – dive into a great barbeque meal – dare to enter the pie and watermelon eating contests. And for the young and brave, have a ball on the carnival rides. The live music is always great, and always danceable. For more information and details, go to forestvilleyouthpark.org. Volunteers are always needed – consider helping out.

Downtown Farmers Market

After three very successful years at Russian River Vineyards, the Forestville Certified Farmer’s Market is coming to downtown Forestville in our new Downtown Park. Opening day, June 7, and will feature Pony Rides along with a Petting Zoo for kids, a wine garden for adults, and local food vendors, drinks, live music and frozen art ice cream for all. Food vendors include our local restaurants and chefs – Forestville Pizzeria, La Rosas Taqueria, Cannetis Roadhouse Italiana, and Tiny Town Café

As always, the market will feature fresh fruits and vegetables from local farmers: Russian River Vineyards Farm, RLR Vineyards Farm, Creek Song Farm, and SunRise Ranch, all of Forestville, and Ortiz Bros. of Santa Rosa. Plus several talented local artists will be offering unique gifts.

Hours: 4pm to 7pm starting June 7, and ongoing every Tuesday thru the end of October. Location: Our new Downtown Park: 6990 Front St., Forestville, California, (across the street from Fred’s Liquor).

Community Fund

The Forestville Community Fund (FCF) is now accepting applications for cash grants for local projects that will enhance downtown Forestville and/or provide community benefit in the Forestville area (the 95436 zip code).

$10,000 will be distributed this year. Established in 2007 by the Forestville Planning Association, it is grateful for the annual contributions from the Bodean Company and Canyon Rock Quarry as well as from individual donors.

Applications are reviewed by the FCF Advisory Committee, which represents a wide range of community interests such as schools, seniors, the FPA, the Chamber of Commerce, the Youth Park, artists, and other interested citizens. It then recommends which projects to fund to the Board of the Forestville Planning Association. **In evaluating grant applications, the Committee gives priority to those projects that include one or more of the following: impact the most people; can “match” dollars from other sources; involve collaboration with other groups or projects; and have a volunteer component.

Previous grants, ranging from $500-$7000, have been given to local organizations, ad hoc groups, non-profits, individuals, and businesses. Applications must be submitted or postmarked by June 15 – forms can be filled out online or downloaded at 95436.org; paper copies are available at Forestville Pharmacy, and The Service Station. See 95436.org (click the Community Fund tab) for important guidelines, further information, and a list of past projects.

Be imaginative and creative – what does the community need?

A Message From the Queen

“To the citizens of the United States of America from Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II: In light of your failure in recent years to nominate competent candidates for President of the USA and thus to govern yourselves, we hereby give notice of the revocation of your independence, effective immediately. Congress and the Senate will be disbanded. A questionnaire may be circulated next year to determine whether any of you noticed.”
